According io CSUFs International Student Services. there were - approximately 382 Moslem students attending CSUF last fall. The figures may be somewhat inaccurate since there arc no forms that check students' religion. Moorad, like the other students he has talked to, thinks the book should have ncvci been wrincn. "I think people shouldn't open doors [for things like this to happen]," he said. "As a friend of mine once said, there arc three R's you should never touch upon: Rumors, religion and race." Another Moslem student, Khalcd Alkotob, thinks the whole thing haS been blown out of proportion and the book is doing well because of thaL "I think ihe Ayatollah should have ignored [Rushdie]. Instead, he had to make a big issue of it, give it a lot of attention and pul Iran on the world's shit list when ii already is," he said. Alkotob said the problem of understanding the controversy behind the "Satanic Verses" is complicated for a number of reasons. ' One is the freedom of speech issue. Others arc lhe misunderstanding the West has of the Moslem religion as a whole, and ihe recent rejuvenation of Islamic fundamentalism throughout the Middle East in particular. Freedom of speech in the U.S. parallels lhat of religion lo Moslems or olhcr countries where religion is considered most important, Moorad said. Moorad said there is a definite difference in balance. He said he doesn't understand how the U.S., which under the Constitution values people's rights, can turn around and defend one man when they should be defending people, or a group. In this case. Moslems. "In a country where most high school students cannot locale Japan on a world map, people's knowledge of their own religion is rather shallow, leaving a loi lo be desired for their knowledge of olhcr religions," said Alkotob. "For an American Christian, a Muslim is as* exotic and distant as a Buddhist would be," he said, ""but not for a Middle- Eastern Christian, who first of all calls God 'Allah,' and second of all, shares a lot of customs and traditions with his Jewish "and Muslim neighbors." He went on to explain that Judaism, Christianity and Islam arc similar in that all three arc monotheistic and believe in, basically, die Old Testament. Even the Islamic book, ihe Koran, has accounts of the B.C. era identical to lhat of the Old Testament. "Once people sec how similar these religions arc. the closer ihey are to understanding how Moslems feci," Alkotob said. Moorad offered another theory on the problem. "[Rushdie] is just trying io create a problem," he said. "What else do you call a person who gets kicked out of a country [India], moves to another one [England] and criticizes the government there? He's crazy." THEATRE AT THE U presents the PORTABLE DANCE TROUPE 1989 Concert MOVIN' OUT March 2-4. 8-11 at 8:00p.m. & March 5 at 2:00p.m. John Wright Theatre Come and be surprised...again!
