Earlier, along Highway 12 by the rally sue, "No Parking" signs pul up by Napa and Solano counties stretched a mile in either direction of the county line. In ihe quiet hours before dawn, some observers started io wonder if a few people had set of f to kill a gnat with an elephant gun. Just before 5 a.m., about a dozen local and stale police set aside their coffee and breakfast at the coffee shop and took off at high-speed towards an unknown destination with a very well-known purpose. Ex yxpectations were lowering in lhe light drizzle of the Napa morning. About 70 people were gathered at 9 am. in lhe cow pasture across from the access road leading up id Lonsdale's rancjf Roughly 60 of Ihose people were media representatives. The police formed a barricade on either side of ihe road, with a special detachment from the Napa S hen f f s Dent, wearing camouflage outfits and sporting M-16 ' assault rifles and lear-gas dispensers, patrolling the hills. Four Chinook military helicopters circled warily above the demonstration site. It was hard to see where the expected threat came from. A little after nine, a van full of skinheads drove up the hill, where ihey were greeted by WAR'S "guards" at a small rise. Seconds bier, lhe skinheads were instructed by their brethren to put iheir hands on their heads. A citizen's arrest had been made. According io Lonergan ihe group had attempted to bring unauthorized weapons into the WAR rally area. They were instructed to drive back down the hill and leave, which Ihey did. Al 9:30 a.m. the first interesting event occured. A group of forty or so media people walked past police lines and up lhe hill io try and talk to lhe skinheads, led by Fresno Bee photographer Lloyd Francis, Jr. The journalists were met with little humor by the skinheads.
