Sports letters to the editor To the editor, I am concerned with the treatment that ihe soon to be #1 nationally ranked Fresno State softball team has received. 3,300 other fans wdl pro¬ bably agree with me when I say the seating for Sunday's championship game (UCLA vs. FSU) was down right ridiculous. ^ I'm sure it would have sufficed if this were the 5 and under Tee-ball championship, but come on this was ihe #1 learn in the nation UCLA (the 1988 World Series Champs) facing our #2 FSU (the 1988 World Series runner- ups), don't ihey deserve some respect? Some say softball isn't a big money maker. With facilities that seal like FSU, who wants to pay the money to stand 7 people deep in ihe outfield. If you had more seats, you can pack more of a crowd, and make more money! It's the old supply and demand. Gosh, I can figure that out, and I'm not even a business major. I'm not asking you for some gradiose stadium (although they deserve it, and it would be nice for ihe fans). I just think ihey should have moved some of ihe empty track bleachers over to accomodate the NCAA record breaking crowd. This was a case of poor planning. But, that's not a plausible excuse. The size of the crowd was known well in advance, hopefully they'll plan better for regionals! "She was the only pitcher Texas AAM had. She would pitch three or four games a day during tournaments, "She never told me to go to a school, but she did talk to me about different schools. She went lo Texas A&M for all the wrong reasons. I don't see the same thing happening to me here." Carpenter was recruited heavily following her last season at Edison. She posted a 13-7 record with 12 shutouts, 411 strikeouts and a .09 ERA Her final two recruiting visits were at Arizona State and Fresno. She choose Fresno because "I liked the program." Wright sought Carpenter because she reminded ihe coach of a pitcher she knows. "She has the same style of pitching as I do," said Wright, who was a first-team All-American pitcher herself ihis past summer in the Amatuer Softball Association summer league. "She is confident, but not cocky." Carpenter enters lommorrow's New Mexico State Roadrunncr Invitational with a 2-0 record, two shutouts. 18 strikeouts, and a .00 ERA. In her first outing, Feb. 18 against St, Mary's, Carpenter tied an FSU record with 12 strikeouts. "I never knew that I had tied that record until someone came lo interview me after the game," said Carpenter. "It was a nice way to start out It is just too bad I didn't get one more to break it" 1 A first-inning walk was die only blemmish keeping Carpenter from a perfect game. "I was a little nervous ihe first couple of batters," she said. "After ihe first inning, it went away. I just thought of everything I had lo do." Carpenter pitched the first game for the Bulldogs in last weekend's FSU Pepsi Challenge. She struck out six in FSLTs 5- 0 win against the University of San Francisco. While Carpenter is used lo striking batters out and winning games, she was not ready to see crowds— including Sunday's record 3.357 — watching a softball game. "For high school, we would have 12 to 15 people," said Carpenter. "It is nice lo have the suppon here. I am not used to that."
