This one comes directly stolen from my favorite talk show host John McLaughlin. So here goes. Issue f*l: ihe rush to die over Rushdie. While author Salman Rushdie continues to hide from the radical Moslem world, at least 25 Moslems have been killed in anu-Rushdie demonstrations. Martyrs or Morons'' You make die call. Issue #2: The North Poll. The fate of Oliver North lies in the hands of some pretty out-of-whack people. One juror recalled that North was "ihe head of the soldiers that went to Iran or something" while another commented that North "shredded some papers, that's all I know." It seems to me thai if die trial isn't dismissed for national security reasons (which it will be), these jurors may fail to overlook some of the things that the American public did two summers ago when it found North to be a hero. Namely that he sold arms to the Ayatollah, lied lo Congress, and initiated a Watergate-like cover-up. So stay tuned. Issue #3: Tower of Power It doesn't look like little Johnny Tower is going to be Secretary of Defense after all. But I don't know why he wanted the job in ihe fust place. Before he was nominated, he was making hundreds of thousands of dollars by defense contractors, seemingly to get drunk and pick up babes. Who'd warn to leave that? ' lssuc#4: Planes Suck. Quite literally and it's not too funny. They keep telling us that it's more dangerous to nde in a car lhan in a plane, but I've never heard of the side of any car blowing right off. I don't know about you but trains are looking better every day. Issue #5: Is Mussolini Next? President Bush paid his last respects to Emperor Hirohito last week and some people were upset. Well he was only following President Reagan's example, who honored the Nazi's by going to Bittburg. Let's see after Mussolini, we could honor Stalin and then Tito, and then... Now on to ihe local scene. Issue #6: Culture in Fresno!' Don't make me laugh. Everyone's been decrying the closing of the Tower Theatre as one of the last bastions of civilization in Fresno. Come on folks, we're living in a place made famous by animated fruit. So raise a sunk when they take off reruns of The Andy Griffith Show, but for now pipe down. Issue #7: Johnny can't write? Then get a job at The Fresno Bee. Thai second- rate rag has a lot of nerve. 35 cents? The New York Times costs 35 cents. The Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post only cost 25 cents! Who do these boneheads think they're fooling? Issue #8: Vick's rub. Who is this Scou Vick character and why is he always complaining? I confess I've never met the guy, and I don't know who he is, but every time I read something about him or by him, the first thought that goes through my head is this guy ain't getting any. Hey Vick buddy. GET SOME! Issue #9: Bureaucratic Boneheads! Why don't the people in charge of registration clean-up die mess and allow everyone to register early with tuition and fees due by the first day of classes. I know ii makes sense but give it some thought, if you haven't already. Issue* 10: KKK cruises FSU looking for GLS's. Not much you can say about a group of people whose single greatest accomplishment is dial they are anally inviolate. But 1 have noticed how much the KKK and The Pope dress alike. Think about it. LETTERS Leftists in campus politics Dear editor, I cannot believe I'm actually breaking one of my New Year's resolutions I avowed to myself that I wouldn't write any more editorials to die Daily Collegian because, for lack of a better personal reason, I was furious at last semester's editorship and its lack of leadership. I am, however, over that silly obstacle and back again into the newsprinL Because of my affiliation with the Gay & Lesbian Student Alliance, I've taken some risks with my job, my friendships, my political lies, my sanity and my life. I'm discouraged when the other "radical left" poliucos and members of the GLSA attack certain members of ihe GLSA through questioning their "loyally, allegiance and alliance" uo the lefusi andpolitically correct I'm talking about Peter Robertson, current president of me GLSA and Public- Relations Director of the AS I. By being appointed by Scott Vick and voted in by the ASI senators, Peter is suddenly the "Opportunist," the new "Republican Reality clone." Although I disagree with him on major points and why he endorses Damn Silveria for ASI president next year, I respect him for taking an unpopular and seemingly misunderstood decision to so. Some of the oppressed and disgruntled minorities cry foul and disloyalty, and assume that Peter jumped party lines to serve himself and has bought into the upper-middle-class, white male system thai seems to be running student govemmenL I've talked to Peter about his alliance to the group of and for which he is president and spokesperson. I disagree wnh him on about 40 percent of the reasons why he's openly supporting Damn, yet respect him for having the Chutzpah io stand against the leftist tide that's trying to wash him out of his position within the "politically unpopular" groups the "radical four" have purportedly tried to change die tide in ihe ASI office for quite awhile, still to no avail. A multitude of questions anse around the reasons why the tide has not changed by these politicos who cry wolf. Maybe See LETTERS, page 6
