The student and Kauffman will then modify the article accord ing lo the referees' reports. Tbe final step to success is to send the article back in and have it published with Kauffman and the student as co-authors. After the article is published there are often reprint requests to answer. Currently working with Kauffman are CSUF students Manhew L. Adams and Stewart Mason. Adams, who is in lhe first semester of his senior year, has a dual major in Chemistry and Agricultural Science. He has been working with Kauffman since his freshman year. Adams is co-author of forthcoming articles describing lecture demonstrations of a separation of cobalt and nickel by ion exchange chromatography, reverse solubility temperature relationships, the activity of aluminum metal and the mercury "beating heart." "1 try to repay this debt by usually giving several of my freshmen chemistry students lecture demonstrations or special research projects," said Kauffman. "I have tried to maintain a suitable balance between the transmission of current knowledge and techniques by teaching and the creation of new knowledge by research." His songwriting is rich an adventurous combining wanderlust and down-home roots. At the revived . Newport Folk Festival, one critic claimed that "the most excitement generated by newcomers came from the cut-to-the-bone lyrics of Greg Brown." PBS's Nighttimes Varitev made him the subject to a half-hour television special.
