r Tuesday, March 1,1968 Page 3 fNews Fabric lab tests material mettle By Lois Henry Staff Wrier A $15,000 addition to the Home Economies' textile lab, in the form of a new conditioning room, gives CSUF clothing and textile and fashion merchandising majors the advantage of hands-on experience for future careers, according to Dr. Diane DeVries, assistant professor of clothing and textiles. * The room, which is kept at a constant temperature of 70 degrees and a humidity of 65 percent when tests are being conducted, allows students to test fabrics under stable conditions. The cost of maintaining the climate- controlled room is estimated as "normal or even more energy efficient," said Gary Wilson of Plant Operations. He added the room is so well insulated thai maintenance costs are very low. Also, the room is not used at all times. He said the room is utilized for tests "maybe ten days out of lhe semester." DeVries said that under the stable conditions test results will not vary so much and students will have a better understanding of the properties of the fabrics they are dealing with. Tests conducted in the room will be on a fabric's abrasion resistance, breaking strength, bursting strength, weight and pelting [the tittle, fuzzy balls lhat collect on some kinds of fabrics]. Outside the conditioning room environment fabrics can be tested for color transference, colorfastness to perspiration, sunlight, laundry, appearance and dimensional stability. Equipment now used in the conditioning room was left "unused" in the textile lab for years, said DeVries, because test results would have been "meaningless without a properly controlled environment. " Please see LAB, page 12 Stable conditions In the new textile lab will give students better understanding ol fabric properties, says Dr. Dtanne DeVries.
