'I've been in public schools ever since I started school and I cant understand schools for tbe blind—(hey just bother me," she said. She said that in Ecuador the Mind had an even more difficult time dealing with their handicaps due to the feet that "they just aren't given the opportunities we have. They bide away their handicapped or abandon them. We're trying to get them out into society," she explained. There's no thought given to the safety of the handicapped person." According to Martin, rtanlicapped Americans are given more of an opportunity to integrate into society, in contrast to the blind she encountered in Ecuador. "Their needs down there deal with surviving,' she said. "It's a primitive situ- Martin described her stay in Ecuador as dream produced the desired results. When she was working in an orphanage in Quito, she helped one of the 13 boys to fulfill a 1 learned about another culture; what my Mods are here aren't necessarily what (heir's are down there," she explained. It's a challenge to try to find out what their needs are and to help them adapt," she added. Martin taught 16 ..students in Port Viejo ranging in age from a two-year-old girl to a 38-year-old man. Before her arrival, none of them even knew what school was. Martin's teaching method involved primari ly tactile senses. "One really hard thing was trying to teach them through hearing," she said. "It's so noisy in Ecuador," she added in reference to the country's lack of governmental controls on noise pollution. According to Martin, her method "He wanted to go to the school by the church in town but they wouldn't let him in because he was blind," she said. However, the boy was determined, so Martin helped hio. to get registered and to keep up with his homework. They said he had to lake this drawing class, so I tried to work with him with siring and glue and things you could learn by making. He worked his way into that school and finally they accepted him," she said. The boy was later killed in an accident. Martin plans to return to Ecuador as soon as her visa is renewed.
