Walker gained his second NCAA berth with a 5-3 win over Cal State-Ful- lerton's Paul Halewijn, who had upset him in the first round of tournament Sunday. The victory hiked Walker's record to 40-9 on the year, enabling him to become lhe fifth FSU wrestler to win 40 matches in a season. Mike Gallego, Pablo Saenz, Sylvester Carver and Doug Carnation were the others to accomplish the feaL Arizona State, which won individual titles in six different weight classes, ran away with the team competition. The Sun Devils posted 100 points, easily outdistancing Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo (57) and Utah Stale (47 1/2). Kurt B—rWDUy CtS^M Fresno State tigrn-hander John Salles has won each of his tour decisions by complete game and has struck out 47 batters In 491/3 innings of worn. Salles1 hard work pays off in wins By Jim ProuLx Sports Writer Saying John Salles has been successful here at Fresno State is kind of like saying Manule Bol is tall. Since his arrival here in 1986 from McLane High. Salles has been a cornerstone of the Diamond 'Dogs' pitching staff, winning 21 games in just over two seasons. In 1988, Salles has only got better. In six start*, he has compiled a record of 4-0, wiih an earned run average of 2.01. The junior right-hander has held opposing hitters to an average of only .186 this year, walking only II while striking out 47, including a career-high 15 Ks against Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo last week. In each of his no-decisions, Salles has exited the game with a lead, only to see Ihe games slip through the relief pitchers' fingers. Salles has been virtually unhittable in his Last four starts, giving up only 19 hits in 36 innings of work, striking out 38 baiters and walking but seven on his way io four consecutive complete-game victories. "1 expected to do well, because I'd worked hard all summer and all winter," said Salles, "but 1 sure didn't expect to get off to such a flaming start. I'm glad it's going so well after Last year's disappointment." A 10-8 year wiih a 3.98 ERA wouldn't seem quite so disappointing unless one considered that Salles got oft' to a fast start last year as well, going 7-1 to begin the season. But circumstances just didn't work in his favor. "We really only had iwo starters Last year," he recalled. "We would go on-and-off sometimes, and on the weekends, Td relieve as well (as start). "It was just too much to worry about" The arrival of freshman Erik Schullstrom and the blossoming of left-handed sophomore Rich Crane as starters gives Salles confidence for 1988. "It's great to have other guys who can do the job too," said Salles. "It's a good situation here this year, we've got great hitting, and (FSU shortstop) Eddie Zosky is a pitcher's dream. "I grew up here, and I used to come to the games, so I always knew the program was good," said the Fresno native. Salles is beginning to look beyond Fresno State now. Collegiate baseball players are eligible to be drafted after their junior year, and Salles feels it might be time to plan for the future. Td like to play pro ball if I gci what I want," he said. "I've been here three years and I £*tak I'm ready. If I get •' .ii'ied early enough, I'll sign (with the pros). Td like to be drafted in the first three rounds." For now, though, Salles' attention is focused on Fresno State. He sees the upcoming Best in the West tournament as an indicator of how the team will do in 1988. Please see SALLES. page 8
