The wily catcher showed bunt, bringing the infielders in, then crossed up and sent a high line drive over their beads for his fourth hit of tbe day, chasing Jones from the game. Pinch-hitting for Vondran, Steve Lo- zano squared off against Aggie relief ace Scott Centala and collected his first hit as a Bulldog in fine fashion, driving a double into tbe left field alley to score both Mitchell and Shebelut, giving Fresno State a 5-3 lead. Salles buckled down after the second inning, giving up just two hits in the next five frames. But in the top of tbe eighth, the McLane High product ran out of gas. Salles gave up two base hits and a walk to load tbe bases, then threw a wild pitch into fbe screen allowing a run to score. Tbe batter, Taylor, got a check-swing single into left to bring in the tying run. FSU Head Coach Bob Bennett then brought Salles out in favor of Wolf, who got Fasly to pop up, putting out the fire. Mitchell collected his fifth hit of the game in the eighth, but was left stranded, along with Hosey and Shebelut, when Aggie reliever Nick Felix got Pearse to ground to second, ending the. Bulldog threat The 'Dogs blew another opportunity to score in the bottom of the 10th. Zosky reached on an error by Knoblauch at short, then was sacrificed to second by Shebelut Rather than face Mitchell's hot bat, the Aggies chose to intentionally walk him. On the fourth pitch, Felix not only missed the plate, he missed the catcher, and Zosky took third. The catcher, Tom Carcione, threw the return toss over Felix's head, and Zosky came charging in to score. But shortstop Knoblach fielded the ball, and fired home, nailing Zosky at the plate, and making him one of the very few people in the history of baseball to be thrown out on an intentional walk. Shebelut drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the 13th toning, then look second on a balk by Felix. Once again, the Aggies opted to give Mitchell a free pass. After Kurt Wohlman, batting in place of Lozano, sacrificed the runners to second and third, A&M intentionally walked Hosey as well, loading the bases for Pearse. P^rse, who had been hitless in five at- bats to that point (including three with runners in scoring position) finally did the job, driving a fastball into left to bring in ihe winning run. Though he'd had a frustrating day at the plate, Pearse knew it was just a matter of time. "I don't think anybody could get me five times with runners in scoring position," he said later. Mitchell had an incredible day for the 'Dogs, throwing out two would-be base- stealers, as well as going 5-for-5, and scoring four of the six FSU runs. FSU will now take on UOP April 22, 24 and 25, and me Young April 23. 'Dogs select swimming, water polo MVPs Water polo player Bryon Westmoreland and swimmers Stewart Burgess and Paige Campbell were the chief honorees at the Fresno State Aquatic Awards Banquet Sunday. Westmoreland was named the Bulldog water polo team's most valuable player. The senior from Hanford, a second-team All-Pacific Coast Athletic Association selection, helped lead FSU to a No. 9 national nuiking; finishing second on the squad in scoring, assists and steals. Burgess, a PCAA finalist in three events, was chosen Most Valuable by the men's swimming team. The four-year letterman from Fresno finished eighth in both the 100-yard freestyleand 100-yard backstroke, recording two of the fastest times in FSU history. Campbell, who aided the Bulldogs to two school relay records, was picked Most Valuable by the women's swimming squad. The junior sawm the anchor leg of the 400-yard medley relay leam and (he leadoff leg of the 800-yard freestyle team, both of which set school records. Seniors Terry Cronin, Matt Kennedy and Beau Bamum were honored by the water polo team as Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Most Improved, respectively. The Best Peformance of the Year award, given out by men's swimming, wenuo Norwegian sophomore Kai Mel- berg, who broke both of FSU's backstroke record.
