Page 14 Rriday/March25/1988 Sports 'Big Red Machine' opens PCAA play - By Brian Veneski Sports Writer The Big Red Machine is rolling and it's next obstacle is the opening of Pacific Coast Atheltic Association play. If the No. 6 Fresno State Bulldogs continue their torrid pace, that means trouble for weekend opponent. Long Beach State, as the Dogs seek their 10th straight victory. Fresh off a 13-3 blowout of No.3- ranked defending national champion Stanford, the 26-6 Bulldogs will look far junior John Salles to do the job against the 49ers in Friday night's 7 pm. opener at Beiden Field. Salles is a perfect 7-0 on the year with a sparkling 2.33 ERA and leads the team in strikeouts with 83. Salles also earned ill-tournament honors in the recent Pepsi/Me-N-Ed's Classic that the Bulldogs won. Salles won the championship game with a 4-0 shutout of No, 7 Texas A&M. As for the offense one wonders if the Dogs can keep on hitting at the current .332 pace. It seems as though ihey will because of solid hitting in the middle of the lineup that's been steady thus far through 32 games. The attack is led by Lance Shebelut who's posting some incredible numbers. The senior first baseman leads the team in average (.405), in home runs (13), runs (47), on-base percentage (.530) and is tied for the team lead in RBI along with Steve Hosey (42). Shebelut's RBI totals wouldn't be where they are now if it weren't for the two guys that are getting on base continuously ahead of him Tom Goodwin and Eddie Zosky. Goodwin, the nation's leader in stolen bases with 34, broke the school's all- time record for swipes Ihis past week. That and the fact that he's hilling 381 brighten the eyes of Shebelut as Goodwin crosses the plate courtesy of a Shebelut hit Zosky's no slouch either as he's hitting .311 on the year. He struggled a bit in the tournament last week but against Stanford, he had two hits and three RBL Zosky leads the team in hits with 50 and doubles with 14. is tied with Hosey for second with seven homers and has 37 RBI good for third no the team. His most important role as a batter though may be his patience as he takes pilches for Goodwin to steal his bases. The rest of the team is slacked with the likes of Hosey (7 HRs, 42 RBI, .350), Brandon Mitchell (11 doubles, 28 RBI. .339) and Steve Pearse (10 2Bs, 20 RBI, .326) and the team as a whole is on a record pace to break records in total bases, home runs, stolen bases, bits, RBI, doubles and team average. FSU's opponent Friday night, the 49ers, are 9-26 overall and finished fourth in last week's Pepsi/Me-N-Ed's Classic tournament. They are led by shortstop Mike Lujan and centerfielder Sid Herrera on offense. The Long Beach pitching corps is led by Dan Bryan and Chad Holmes, both of whom had impressive outings in last week's tournament. FSU track hosts Oregon State, Cal Poly By Jon Matsune Sports Editor Fresno State's track teams will be trying to keep their records unblemished Saturday when they take on Oregon State men's squad and the Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo women's leam Saturday at Wannerdam Field. The Bulldog men's team, 10-0 on the year and 5-0 in outdoor competition, is coming off an 105-58 victory over Boise Stale and an 143-19 trouncing of Red- lands College last Saturday. A top performer for the FSU men will be junior sprinter Anthony Barnes, a transfer from Tail Junior College. Barnes, a native of Winston, North Carolina, won the 200 and 100-meter dashes and ran the second leg of the first- place 400 relay leam. His time of 20.89 in the 200 ranks second no FSLTs all- time list. The Bulldogs will also expect strong performances from throw specialists John Bender, Mike Ostrorn and Roy Seidmeyer, horizontal jumpers Reggie Jackson and Billy Coleman, and distance runner Sal Rodriguez, among others. FSU's women are also 10-0 overall and 5-0 indoors, after Seating Boise State 102-43 and demolishing Redlands 133-8. Leading the way was Rose Blake, who triumphed in the 200 and 400-meter races, ran the third leg of the winning 400-meter relay, and like Barnes, recorded 12 1/2 points. Blake's 55.68 effort in the 400 placed her in the third spot on Fresno State's ail-time list, and her 24.67 200 moved her to fourth in the all-time Bulldog rankings. The FSU sprint corps, though, suffered a devastating blow when freshmen sensation Kirnmy Matthews broke her leg last week. Matthews, who has already cracked the Bulldogs' all-ume Top 10 lists in the 100 and 200, will be lost for approximately six weeks. Other Bulldogs standouts include Cathy Jones, FSU's record-holder in the 800; Lacy Barnes, an Olympic Trials qualifier in the discus and China Blockton, who recorded a personal record 159-4 in the discus last Saturday. Simone Srubek, who joined the team last week after her season with the FSL' women's basketball squad ended, posted a personal best of 5-8 in the high jump Saturday. Another Bulldog basketball player, Mary Gainey, also joined the team Last week, becoming part of the FSY distance corps led by Janine Ogas and Stacey McAfee. The FSU men are currently on a 12- meet winning streak while the women's team is on an 11-meet win string.
