TW ,aimnpiMl*aaB» *a>jaa» aw — aaaewaaayeaaaaet-BhaayCet I.H naif Taa%aalial laih Reagan days nearly over: 354 to go I received good news in my Sunday Los Angeles Times. There are only 354 more days to go and dam happy I am about it_ We have lived through 2,570 days of Reagan. Compared to 2,570, 354 days is just the ending of a bad movie. A little over seven years ago, a man named Ron took over this country, and supposedly, there was a rebirth. Colleges were alive with the feeling of capitalism, and conservatives were no longer in the minority on the university campus. No more liberalism, idealism or social reform for the youngsters of this nation. The economy was to be healed There would be no more homeless, no one would go hungry and everyone would just say "No" to drugs. Ron and Nancy were going to bring back Camelot and the joy of being an American. This year begins the lame-duck year of Ronald Reagan's presidency (I am resisting the obvious crack that Reagan has always been lame), but as Ron said in his Stale of the Union Address, they're still here—only for 354 more days, though. Why, you ask, is the Times covering how.many more days Reagan has left in office? There is a La Jolla author and publisher who has created a special calendar for those who are eagerly awaiting the credits of this Reagan movie. John McGilvery, who admits he does not have Reagan's autograph and really doesn't want it, is selling "The Ronald Reagan Countdown Calendar." Ii contains 746 prime quotes from the Reagan era that are, in his words, "Edifying, astonishing, hilarious and appalling." It opens with a quote from Ben Franklin: "In rivers and bad governments, the lightest things swim at the top." I am hoping this calendar will include most of my favorite Reagan quips. The ones that really show the true abilities of Ronald Reagan and his desperate need for a better script and director. Reagan showed some honest-to- goodness Americanism when he declared that no one in America went without food and if they did, it was just because they did not know where to go. The president, of course, said this right after he vetoed a bill that was to establish a program to inform people where to go for government aid- Speaking of government aid, the administration handled it well when Reagan declared there were no homeless in the United States—at least if they were homeless it was by choice, that it was their own fault. With the help of his advisers, Reagan conveniently joined hands in Hands Across America (a joining of hands from one coast to another to raise money for the homeless). The public liked that- The public didn't like ii when Reagan wanted to visit the Nazi cemetary in Bilburg on a trip to Germany. But hey, these guys died too, and it would help relations between the nations, according to Ron. What it did do was stir up a history lhat Reagan was not capable of dealing with. Reagan did deal with the Iran-Confra scandal pretty well. He forgot. That was good thinking on the administration's part. If you don't want lo discuss it, you forget Can you remember what you were doing on Aug. 15,1985? I cant Of course, I wasn't trading arms for hostages or diverting funds to the Contros. My favorite, absolutely most favorite, Reagan remark was that a huge trade deficit could be a sign of strength. Does lhat mean Reagan's quoiahles could be a sign of intelligence? Only 354 more days to go, and as "The Ronald Reagan Countdown Calendar" ends on Jan. 20,1989 with the inauguration of whoever will be our nexl president; "Noon: and not a moment too soon." JoAnn Baikal's column appears every Monday in The Daily Collegian. Reader Response to The Daily Collegian is welcome. Please send tetters of no more than 250 words to The Daily Collegian, Keats Campus Building California State University Fresno, Fresno, California 93740-0042. Letters must be signed and have the author's name, telephone number, and address. Aviles thankful Dear Editor, Due to an academic tragedy, I had to be removed from the infamous Associated Students Senate (the place where the "good" and "honest" people roam). Now that I am leaving the "Big House," I would like to thank all of-the people last semester who had faith in me and helped me to try and stop the AS from tricking the students. It's tough to fight against tbe political elites of our school, but it's interesting. As a result of my article last semester, the Berkeley trip and the Tahoe retreat were cancelled, though AS members might argue otherwise. The retreat was held this weekend in Fresno for about four hours. The idea of hiring a business manager also seemed to disappear last semester. They were stopped from wasting some of the students money. I used to think it was impossible to change things in the Senate. Now I know it's possible, even though you might not have tbe support of any of the senators. As long as you don't let these little political titles get to your head and as long as you don't become a political wimp like all of the other senators last semester, with the exception of John Phillips (I haven't seen him display any of what appear to be essential political qualities), you can make changes. I believe that with the help of the students last semester, we were able to carve a tunnel of hope in that ultra enormous mountain of despair. If we have faith in ourselves and the people who want to make changes (a bulldozer that can get through a petrified rock wouldn't hurt either), we can continue to carve these tunnels. As long as there are people like Scott Vick and Mark Astone and the Muppets controlling our student government, there will always exist anu-corruption forces to fight against them. Sincerely, Ex-Senator of the School of Natural Sciences, Frank Aviles P.S. I only hope my removal doesn't cause any of the AS members to go into an emotional state of major depression. Please see LETTERS, page 3
