He eventually drifted into obscurity and died mysteriously in 1971 with traces of heroin in his system. It's kind of ironic. The high throne of the world's scurnmiest sport is something of a PJL job. As a result. Sonny Liston is not often considered an Ali, a Marciano or a Louis — and neither is Larry Holmes. History may very well describe Holmes as a big mouth who failed to tie Rocky Marciano's record, not as the skilled fighter who took Gerry Cooney apart as if he were an old automobile, not as the courageous fighter who dug down deep to defeat Eamie Shavers and Ken Norton, and not as the sympathetic fighter who begged the referee to stop his bout with an overmatched Marvis Fraizer. Sonny Liston is often known as the ex-con who quit in his comer and got knocked out by an "invisible" punch, not as the fearsome fighting machine who twice tossed Floyd Patterson around like a rag doll and twice outslugged powerful Cleveland Williams. It appears that in more than a few ways, being a good heavyweight champion requires more than showing tact in the ring. Ii requires laci outside the ring. Something that first-rate fighters Holmes and Liston didn't seem to have. Maybe it should be that way because the ability to get along with people is an important quality in every aspect of life. However, a lack of polish in one area should not be allowed to downgrade his fine polish in another. In the case of Larry Holmes, as it was with that of Sonny Liston 25 years back; trie paint has spilled over the lines, the milk has dripped off the glass, and the sad, sad song on the stereo has found it's way through ihe neighbor's open window. CieditCaid Fresno State sparkles in Pacific Northwest Indoor By Jon Matsune Sports Editor A thrilling victory by the men's mile relay team was the highlight of an excellent performance by the Fresno State indoor track and field squads in the Pacific Northwest Bell Indoor in Portland, Oregon Saturday. The invitational portion of the men's mile relay saw the Fresno State quartet of Chris Olsen, Benjie Green, Will Breckinridge and Harland South record a time of 3:24.2 to barely hold off Oregon, which finished at 3:24.7. The Bulldog win was just one of many fine efforts by FSU athletes. In the collegiate division of the men's 300, Green finished second at 59.7; and in the open section of the 400, South took third with a 50.02. Also standing out for the 'Dogs was All- American Tamara Compton who placed third in the open long jump (18-9 1/2) and first in the collegiate 55-mcicr dash (7.1). Fresno State's April Freow was barely edged out for first in the invi-tational 55- meter dash. Freow and Oregon's Stephanie Hunter each compiled a time of 7.20, but Hunter picked up first place by what FSU Men's Head Coach Red Effles called "an eyelash.'' Rose Blake, meanwhile, took second in the open 400 at 60.13, being bested only by Olympic medalist Judy Brown-King. Cathy Jones, Michelle Ponsetto. Kim McRae and Rose Blake gave Fresno State a victory in the collegiate mile relay, combining for a 4:013 and by 8.1 seconds, shattering the meet record held by thel987 Bulldogs. Other Bulldog firsts in the collegiate competition were picked up by Pal Alduenda (15-9 in the pole vault) and Ernie Freer (4:21.9 in the mile). Janine Ogas captured second in the two-mile, recording a 10:54.1 and missing first by just 1.2 seconds. McRae, witb a 1:11.1 in the 500, placed second. "The Pacific Northwest Bell Indoor is not aa team competition by any means," said FSU Indoor Head Coach Bob Fraley, "But we still had a good team effort from all of our individuals."
