. Thursday, January 28,1988 Faff 3 News Building considered hazard By Mike Burwell Staff Writer Although classes are being scheduled for fall '88 in the San Ramon 1 building, there is a petition signed by 20 faculty members saying they will not continue to teach there. "I have no other choice but to schedule classes," said Harry G. Costis, chairman of the Department of Information Systems and Decision Science. "[Administration] promised that when the new- Leon S. Peters building went up. no/ more classes would be scheduled there. Faculty will boycott the building if nothing is done." Besides being described as "unhealthy," the building lacks heating and air conditioning and is described in the peti tion as not suitable to classroom standards. In the petition, the building was listed as "unsafe, unsanitary and unfit for university classes." "I'm angry," said professor Kelly Black. "It's been a temporary building too long. The building has body odor, you have to wade through water, the roofs leak and movies presented in other classrooms easily distract your class. It's a horrible place to teach. "I'm tired of being stepped on," he said. "I've been upset about this for 10 years. Students should refuse to take courses there." The petition is presently being reviewed by the administration and has the support of the Dean of the School of Business, Joesph Penbera. k Royal Bobbins Beautiful Clothes at Sensible Prices Natural, colorful, comfortable, fabulous fall fashions for men, women and children. Shaw Free Appetizers & Happy Hour Drinks Come Join the Fun!!! The main problem stems from the fact that the Leon S. Peters building—where all business classes were to be held—simply isn't large enough to space all the classes. Costis hopes that the San Ramon building will be destroyed and rebuilt. "The building should be torn down and an up-to-date facility built to replace it," he said. Black believes that administrators are unaware of the poor condition of the facility and thinks an open house would give them a better idea of its quality. According to Black, there has been a promise for years that the building would be rebuilt. "You can look it up. Back in 1977, President Baxter told the faculty it would be demolished and the faculty cheered," he said.
