First off, never get into a taxi that doesn't have the yellow light above the front windshield lit-it means you end up paying more than twice as much as you should. One night three of my friends and I did just that and ended up paying about $4.60 when we should ve paid about a buck eighty Never again...we got wise quick Or at least I thought so If you loqk for a cab after midnight, you may as well expect to pay a little bit more just because they know you need to get home and the last underground tube goes out about 11 p.m Also if there are five of you wanting a ride in the cab at night, they often try to get twice as much money out of you by telling you that they are only licensed for four people Well, that's true,but somehow, they never seem to bother mentioning that in the daytime, only at night. If you call their bluff, you can sometimes get out of paying the extra charge A terribly foolish thing to do in England is to assume that salami is- well, like it is in the States. Believe me. it's not! Stupidly, I ordered a salami jr first outing and ended up eating salami that was, I would say, at least SO percent pure lard. Cross. While we were there, we managed to hit some British discos. (I told you I was determined to have a good time.) Anyway, the cover charges are priced a little bit above average compared to various discos I have found up and down the California coast. Of the four discos our group hit,'we paid about $2 once and about $4 the rest of the Being served at a disco was no problem as long as you looked over 18, butit was a problem getting the bartender to take your order-especially If they1 realized you were 'damned colonists' as we were often referred to. You'll probably never see closing hours posted inside a disco, but if you do. don't believe them. I found from the ones I patronized, that London > discos dose when they 'bloody well" feel like it. If the owner figures he's made enough money for the night, he'll close up shop an hour early As far as the musk In the discos. well, it is half of our 60s songs and half of the disco songs that we'd gotten so terribly sick of in the States before we left Just so you know what I'm talking about, 'YMCA' was on the top of the charts the second week we were there. Of course, the British have their own style of music which you could probably bet won't hit the States.. Their No 2 song on the charts that same week was one entitled 'HifXie With Your Rhythm Stick.' The title lr\ the cleanest part of the song. Somehow, I can't see the FCC allowing that song on the air in the States. In spite of all of these rip-offs to be aware of, London is a fantastic place to be in January.
