The Daily Collegian Talent, but no hmqfrj . Women cagers subsitute hustle for size In basketball, height and talent most often prove the main ingredients for a Lacking in the former:, CSUF's women's basketball squads have relied on the latter in games against northern California teams this season With the 1978-79 campaign well under way, the varsity squad coached by Donna Pickel holds a 6-8 overall record and is 0-3 in Northern California Conference play 'It's become very evident that in order to win you have to be able to Feh_2 deadline recruit - to bring in talent and size," explained Pickel. 'We have a lot of talent but wedon t have the size," she added. Despite the early conference losses, Pickel anticipates the team finishing in the top half of the conference. 'Our strength is developing in our defense," Pickel noted 'Offensively, we have a very strong inside game with Connie Cooch and Louise Tonascia. We have good potential for outside shooting with Pamela Harriel, Karen Harper, and Vernie Miller * The team, though, still lacks consistency, which is needed if it hopes to improve its present league record, suggested Pickel. The three losses were recorded at the hands'of UC Berkeley, 67-55, Stanford, 64-50; and most recently to USF, 63-57 Reviewing the USF game Pickel said, 'I tiiink we got a lot of good play from everyone on the bench ' The difference in the game was in the amount of turnovers, felt Pickel, with the Bulldogs coughing up the ball 34 times Despite a late scoring surge in the second half-where Fresno, down by 18 came within three points of tying the score—the Bulldogs weren t able to pull out a win USF was led by All-American candidate Mary Hile, who scored 30 points. Connie Cooch led the Bulldog attack with 13 points while Louise Tonascia followed with 11. Non-consistent officiating arid a lack of timeouts near the end of the game also figured in the Bulldog defeat, fill Pickel * The junior varsity fared better, downing Modesto Junior College 61- 59 last Saturday Leading the Bulldog scoring were Phyllis Johnson with 18 points and Bobbie Hales with 14 points.
