Sports Pane -/October 14,1981-Dally Col lag Ian Mike Pennl Dally Collegian Clelia Harr (right) and Kim Elaenhart go up to block a shot against UOP last week. Women's volleyball to face SCU The CSUF women's volleyball team will be looking for its first NorCal Athletic Conference victory of the season tonight when the Bulldogs travel up north to take on the Santa Clara University Broncos Came time is set for 7:30 p.m. In the opening week of the NorCal volleyball race, CSUF dropped its first two conference matches — one to highly-regarded University of the Pacific and the other to Cal Berkeley, a team Bulldog coach Leilani Overstreet feels CSUF should have beaten. 'That loss really disappointed me," she said earlier this week, "I know we're a better team than Cal but we didn't show it. I guess we were just flat after playing such a hard game against UOP but I hardly recognized my team out there.' Cal took the match in five games, 10-15,15-7,15-6,10-15,15-5. The Bulldogs have already faced Santa Clara in the UC Davis tournament earlier this year and came away with a two-game, 15-3,15-8, victory. 'Santa Clara is another team that we should beat," said Overstreet. 'But I'M not counting on anything after that loss to Cal. Santa Clara choked a little when we first played them and they should be more prepared this time around. They're a much improved team and they have good height on the front line. We are much quicker, though, and run a more sophisticated attack." Santa Clara goes into tonight's match with a NorCal mark of 0-1 after also losing to UOP. The Broncos are 7-5 overall. On Saturday, the Bulldogs will have a much tougher fight on their hands when they take on Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo in the CSUF Men's Cym. Cal Poly is ranked fifth In the NCAA ratings and currently owns a 26-5 record. The Mustangs have already beaten CSUF twice this season. Mayfield turns in seventh - CSUF -cross country runner Scott _/field turned in a time of 30:46 in e 10,000-meter race to finish in seventh place individually and lead his team to- a fourth-place showing in the Stanford Invitational last weekend. UCLA finished first in the event with 73 points while Cal Berkeley finished second and Colorado State wound up third. Independent runner Adrian Royle took the individual first-place honors. Otr_r CSUF runners in the event included Barasa Thomas (31:25—30th place), Cary Gonzales (31:27—31st), Ramon Carcia (31:48—40th) and Ray Knerr(32:09-59th). Water polo team finishes third The CSUF water polo squad captured third place in last weekend's Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Tournament. CSUF sUrted the tourney off by beating the host Mustangs 15-8 and then went on to drop San Francisco State 11-5 and blitz Loyola-Ma rymont 20-4. But that's where the winning streak came to an end as the Bulldogs proceeded to lose to UC San Diego, 7-4. 'The loss to UC San Diego could be classified best as frustrating,' said Bulldog coach Terry Ciffen after the tourney. 'We took a total of 32 shots and only four of them went in. In fact, we had the goalie beat six times in the first period alone, only to hit the post or to have the ball sail over the cage. * The Bulldogs are now 13-9-1 and will enter PCAA play with a 2-3-1 record against PCAA teams in preseason tournament action. CSUF will play Cal State Los Angeles and UC Irvine Friday.
