Racist graffiti surfaces over three week period Over a period of three weeks the CSUF campus has been the scene of two incidents of anti-Chkano graffiti and of an apparent hoax for Ku Klux Klan recruitment. Dean of Student Affairs William Corcoran sai. a fryer was taken from the side of the bookstore by a 'well- intentioned person" whom he would not identify. The fryer was a handwritten message on a piece of binder paper that said there would be a KKK recruitment rally at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday in the CSUF amphitheater. However, when that time came, the only people there were a few members of the press, Corcoran and some security personnel Corcoran said he believed it was a'hoax, but that if Klan members had shown up, he would have had them escorted off campus. He said that he would never grant the Klan a permit to use regular campus facilities, but he could not stop them from using the Free Speech Area. However, he stressed thay they would be taken off of the campus at the first sign of trouble. Two and a half weeks earlier, anti-Chicano graffiti appeared on the Mini Corp office, which is the migrant education program for students who want to teach bilingual education^ The graffiti also appeared on the Bilingual Education office. A spokesperson for the mini corp said a scrawled message on the bulletin board said, 'KKK Wetbacks go home.* The same message was penned on the door of the bilingual office, said Teresa Perez, a professor of bilingual education. The graffiti apparently took place over a weekend in the Education- Psychology Building, where both offices are located. Perez said the building is supposed to be locked on the weekends, but that sometimes professors go to their offices in the building and for- Ret to close the door behind them. The students, ho-fver, know exactly what each symbol means, though no one in the dass Is a history major. The class? Shorthand-a subject many would probably like to take, but just never seem to get around to. Currently enrolled in the dass are only seven students. According to Dr. Robert Flam, die instructor for the course, it was just five years ago that there were 40 students, and the dass had to be offered in two sections. Terry Avila, an office administration major, says she wishes the dass were bigger because 'it can really benefit others.' She says that while the dass is a prerequisite for some of her other courses, she is glad she is taking it. It has helped, she says, in her note taking for other classes, and it is a good subject to know for any field. Flam says the class is 'like learning a foreign language.' The course takes a great deal of time in the Initial stages, he says, 'but after you master the fundamentals of it, it Isn't hard.* The dictionary defines shorthand as any system of speed writing using symbols for letters, words and phrases. And that is exactly what it Is. Shorthand is writing words by their phonetic sound. Each sound we make has a separate symbol. These symbols put together draw out a word. Although shorthand is not one of the more popular courses on campus. It is something an employer will look for in any type of office job, according to Flam. Looking through the newspaper classified ar1--- rthand background will get the desirable jobs, and the better salaries. One reason shorthand is desired by employers Is because ft can speed up note taking by three times. Flam says that a person writing in long hand could probably do 35 to 40 words a minute. Using shorthand can speed that up to 100 words a minute. Asked if shorthand was obsolete, Flam said that was asked 20 years ago... One of the students in the class says shorthand should be learned by more students because many of the large corporations require It. The Fresno Police Department, the Pacific Telephone, and the Southern Pacific Railroad company are just a few firms in Fresno that insist on shorthand in the background for some jobs for those they hire. When asked if he thought shorthand was becoming obsolete. Flam said that same question was asked 20 years ago and the dass is still being offered. 7ry a 7n . 6 mpfn of Our Guthm CB/arxfad 7o6acco PIPES a_ftaara_e,_ Pipe Racks Savinelli ^_^^^____^_^ Tobacco G.B.D. tf&^-Cife Pouches Jobey ^ga%**^^**a\a^ Humidors JoTl ■ Mvt & .on £ £?h Trays Calabash. _? _Jt s»9»H» ^jg^ 375 W.
