IPfl-SCB <_ March 19,1984 Mcg^s ***%* Japanese student turns paper bags into art ___.__. The American consumer may associate a paper bag with carrying home groceries, and once it's emptied, with carting out the garbage. But CSUF Art Graduate Toru Naka- tani chose the paper bag as a medium to express a segment of his life in his work "A Month." which will be on exhibit April 13 through May 27 at the Laguna Gloria Art Museum in Austin, Texas. "A Month" is composed of 30 paper bags, each with a silkscrcen imprint of the date on the outside and ihe day's edition of Thc Fresno Bee transferred on thc inside, cataloging a 30-day month. "It is a kind of diary. I was living in Fresno then, and it is my life in that time span lhal I show in mv work." he said. The 37-year-old Na'katani, once a graphic artist for Kusumoto Neon in Osaka. Japan, said with a laugh, "my friends look al the paper bags and Ihey see garbage bags too. they don't see art." Yet he appears unaffected by the viewer's conception of his works. "Once I complete my works, they are independent. Art is self-interpretive. Each person can interpret it in their own way." Several of Nakatani's works will be on exhibit around the country this year. His work has been accepted into three of four competitions he has recently entered. Nakatani said he was drawn to studying fine arts in the U nited States as he learned 'They don _ understand what I'm doing. I tried to explain, but I gave up.' —Nakatani o appreciate American graphic arts, sorked seven years as a graphic art hen as a freelance designer and illustra n Japan for three years. n.lyo wald Center for the Graphic Arts at the University, of California, Los Angeles throujgh April 15. The two pieces of the work each measure 12-and-one-half-foot square and are composed of 900 cards in 23 colors, each color assigned a word from a poem. "It depicts the transformation of a concrete image to an abstract image by thc language system," Nakatani explained. The concrete image is Brooke Shields' face, chosen because he considers her "beautiful." The position of the colored cards is determined by the natural color of the face, and because the word assigned to each color is arbitrary, il creates a "pattern of meaning," he said. In the abstract image, each word becomes part of a sentence, which creates a "pattern of color determined by chance within the system of language," said Naka- "Transformation"will be shown along with works from 28 other artists chosen for the Eighth National Exhibition, sponsored by the Los Angeles Printmaking Society. Nakatani competed against 335 other applicants, and only 70 of the 3,000 works entered will be shown. Before Nakatani began his study at CSUF, earning a B.A. in both Art and Linguisticsin 1981,and an M.A.in Art in 1983, he had to learn the English language. He began studying in his early 30s what was to him a foreign language. Although he said he cannot speak English very well, he utilizes English in his works because he understands its grammar better than Japanese grammar.- He explores what he calls the "ambiguous" meaning of thc word "zone" in- his work of the same title, which was on exhibit February 6 through March 2at the Fourteenth Annual National Print and Drawing Exhibition, held at thc Dakota Northwestern University in Minot.
