Hotaer Copy editor It appears that Spock will return to the screen in the third episode of the "Star Trek" films. James Doohan, who plays "^otty" in the syndicated TV show and the successful movie spin-offs, said that "somebody spotted Leonard (Nimoy, the actor who played Spock and the man directing the third film) and said,'hes directing with his ears on.' Now, what could that mean?" Doohan, 63, was at CSUF to lecture and entertain. He showed a National Aeronautics and Space Administration film, a documentary on the space shuttle program he narrated: a blooper reel from the canceled TV series: and "The Trouble WithTribbtes,"apopular"StarTrek"TV episode. Included in the evening was a long question and answer session. Doohan said he created the character ot Scotty. "They (a director and producer he had auditioned for) asked me do some of my accents for the 'Star Trek'people. I did six or seven," Doohan said, "and they. asked me which one I liked best. I chose the Scottish. It's very traditional that a Scottsman would be anengineer." He said he named the character after a close relative. He had the audience laughing with examples of other ways the character might sound, doing a Mexican, heavy British, French and pirate accent. Doohan said that trying to come up with THE reason "Star Trek"is so popular is "impossible. There is no answer for it. It is a combination of things." But he had little trouble giving what he thought were reasons for the quick cancelations of "Space 1999," and "Battlestar Galactica." •Those shows "didn't.have characters people could associate with,*1 Doohan said. "I remember watching the three hour 'Battlestar Galactica'premiere, the first 45 minutes was a non-stop space battle. Where was the character development?" Doohan, in a press interview following a two hour autograph session, said that he tires of people asking questions on technical issues. As things turned out, Bennett was happy to escape with a win. A "flat" Bulldog squad survived four Wildcat runs in the first two innings to hand upset-minded Chico State a 6-5 loss. in front of a small crowd in what has become the Bulldogs' home away from home. The win ups the Build oga record to 9-6- 1 as they head into a three-game weekend • series with the UC Irvine Anteaters. The Wildcats fell to 6-8 on the season. "I thought we were a little flat," said Bennett. "You nave to realize that when you play a Division II team, they can still play like a Division I team on the field. "But we came, around in the late innings." In the early going, it was the Bulldogs' listless style of play, combined with the crafty pitching of Randy Vrooman that left Fresno-Statc on the short end of a 4-1 count after seven innings. It was in the eighth inning that the Bulldogs began to resemble a Division I team again while bringing the outmanned Wildcats back down to a Division 11 level. With Vroooman beginning to tire as his pitches continually found their way to the upper part of the strike zone, the Bulldogs exploded for five runs on four hits. Tbe outburst helped Rich Sorenson, who surrendered one hit and struck out two while burling the final two innings for the Bulldogs, earn his second win of the season against no losses. The Bulldogs sent nine men lb the plate in their big inning, including a stretch of three consecutive singles, but it was a costly Wildcat error that opened tbe floodgates. After a Scott Buss walk and a Joey Xavier out, Cal Cain grounded into what appeared an easy groundout, but tbe Wildcats booted it a rally-starting error. John Mecrt's pinch hit opposite field double sent Buss home and Vrooman to the showers after allowing four hits and one walk in 7 1/3 innings. The Bulldogs greeted new pitcher Curt Schoelkopf, who eventually look the loss, with two singles, that tied up the contest. The go ahead run came when Carrett Crough raced home on Russ Hall's sacrifice fly to centerfield. David Studdert then sent Tony Con- telmo with a bad-bop basel.it for the Bulldogs' sixth run, an insurance run that would prove to be the winning run . Tbe Wildcats rallied for One ninth inning tally before Bob Jacobsen earned his third save bf the'season. The Bulldogs found themselves in trouble ear ly against the determined Wildcats. After the first pitch as a matter of fact. Jeff Bores sent Mark Gardner, first pitch of the game over tbe left field fence to give the Wildcats a lead they would hold until the eighth inning. Dale Hodds' three-run blast in tbe second inning gave the Wildcats their early four-run advantage. BULUDOa BITS: Bennett said ha was "surprised" by Gardner's trouble with the long ball. P m. doubleheader. Carver-Gallego: different eras, same success By Dan Moooay Staff writer On the night of November 23.1983, the . greatest gathering of wrestling talent in Fresno State history took place oa campus in the North Gym. There were no marching bands to be found, no red carpets were rolled out and even the tiniest shred of ticker tape could not be located on the gym's wood floor. The grand event of the evening was a simple handshake and a wish of hick. The list of celebrities was unusually short that cold November night, consisting solely of a muscular, young 167- pounder who was to do battle and a ex- NCAA champion practicing dentistry in a small Northern California town. Mike Gallego, who was the last Fresno State wrestler to capture tbe coveted title of NCAA champion in 1967, was in town that night to meet and observe his heir- apparent as the best wrestler ever turned out by the school. Gallego. interest was' particularly intense sioce the young man be would watch not only wrestled at his old weight, 167 pounds, but bad come within one win last year of breaking his own school record for wins in a season. Sylvester Carver had never heard of Mike Gallego when he arrived on the Fresno State campus to start his Bulldog wrestling endeavors in the fall of 1982. The native of Pensacola, Florida, was fresh off winning thf state junior college 167-pound title six months earlier while attending Chabot College in Hayward. At tha: time in his life Carver wanted only to establish a name for himself and at the same time improve Fresno State's sagging wrestling program. "I first heard the name Mike Gallego about half way through the 19.2-83 season," Carver said. "At that time I was still far from us record bat coach DcLiddo would try to egg me on by using his By a favorable set' of circumstances Dennis DeLiddo has played a leading role in the development of both Gallego and Carver. DeLiddo was an aspiring wrestler himself at the same time Gallego was rewriting the Fresno State record books. Wrestling in tbe 145-160 pound range for Fresno State, DeLiddo thus was thruit into Ihe role of practice partner for the slightly larger Gallego. Coma; SID Mike Gallego (left) shows intense form la 1967; Sylvester Carver toys with foe last year. "Mike was a good buddy of mine after practice but not during," DeLiddo said. "We ended up working out alot together. ~ 13 years after his collegiate wrestling career DeLiddo was hired as coach and savior figure of the crumbling Bulldog wrestling program, la '■ 10 years as the head coach at Clovis Hi|h School De- Liddo-augtrt teams rolled to an eye- popping 145-7-1 record. After agoniring through a 5-12 nightmarish iatial season at Fresno State, DeLiddo went on a JC recruiting spree and one of the gems he was able to collect was one Sylvester Carver. Two yean later and a 90-7 combined record by Carver has shown DeLiddo enough to fairly judge the two pillars of Bulldog wrestling power. "Sylvester has alot more ability then Gallego did but Mike was just so intense about wrestling," DeLiddo said. "He (Gallego) never let up in a match or practice." > Gallego first noticed a certain 167- pound wrestler at tbe end of last season when his 1967 4*-1 record was being put in jeopardy by Carver's rush to the top of the wrestling charts. "I started following his progress near the end of the season because I figured it was about time that someone broke that record," Gallego said. Gallego. 1967 season was a piece of pure wrestling artistry. Except for a 5-2 loss to Oregon State's Jeff Smith, the then 20-year-old was perfect. Gallego culminated his 48-1 season by taking the NCAA title at Wilkes-Banc, Pa. Since that feat, SSee Greatest, page lt

P m. doubleheader. Since that feat, SSee Greatest, page lt |
