Smith, the contest chairman. The society contributes $400 to an essay contest each year to encourage good writing and to reward students from all disciplines who write well. * *As an all-university scholarship honorary, we want to impress on all students the value of dear and imaginative thinking and good writing,* _»mfth said. The theme offers interesting possibilities for students from every area of the university, and the rules of the contest are designed to give equal opportunity to working students and students with more free time.' All contestants are given a choice of specific topics at the beginning of the writing period and are then allowed to write for two and a half hours without using reference materials. Thus, the emphasis is on the ability to organize and apply knowledge or Ideas the student already has. Faculty members from several departments will be judges. Essays rated excellent will receive a $100 prize, and a total of $400 in prize money will be distributed among the contestants. The contest wilt be held on April 9 in the evening. The specific room and additional times will be announced about April 1.
