Tess is such a film. Set in nineteenth-centruy Wessex, England, Tess opens on a caroling group of young women in white dresses, garlands in their hair, led by musicians, skipping along a path to the meadow for their dance Tess is among them, but is set apart by her striking beauty. The innocence and gaiety of youth will pass for Tess after this fateful day and we see a portent of tragedy in her briefly sad eyes .efore the Her poor, hard-drinking father, John Durbeyfield, is unable to provide for his several children, of whom Tess is the eldest As he passes the young revelers on the road below, he learns from the vicar that he is. in fact, the last of the line of knighted d Urbervilles name in a neighboring village Her parents expect Tess' beauty to inspire their wealthy kin's generosity, but ironically, the elderly woman is blind. It is her wastrel son. Alec, (who actually bought the name d'Urberville) who 'seduces' Tess and unleashes a series of misfortunes on the Innocent, ill-fated young woman who-seems punished for and by She is exploited finally by everyone— this girl/woman who appears too delicate for the rigors of the field, with her large brown eyes, long dark hair, and sensuous, bee-stung lips. She is a beautiful object, as well as a genuine d'Urberville,' for the callow Alec whose mistress she becomes. *l was your master once,' he later tells her. 'I shall be again.' When love finds her in the form of the irresistible Angel Clare, her newfound happiness is short-lived. Clare, a clergyman's son, is every maiden's dream and an educated gentleman-farmer who hates . the wealthy class, yet tragically cannot overcome the strictures of society". In spite of his love for her, Tess is 'not the woman I loved" when he learns of her past. Tess is lovingly photographed There are fields worked by peasants or deserted and glowing at dusk, the heath on either side of the long narrow road linking villages, the interiors of the homes of the landed or poor Details 0"Urbervilles (1891) to film, has been faithful to the novel, which glorified the simplicity and wisdom' of villag- Nastassia Kinski, her expression wounded and brooding, is visually perfect as the simple, honest young woman whose life is complicated by the intriguing mantle of beauty she wears. (F. Scott Fitzgerald once said, 'The rich are different from you or me,' and the same could be said of the vastly beautiful). Speaking little, -she conveys wariness, weariness, and, only . occasionally, childlike sunniness. (There has been speculation about Kinski's relationship with director and co-screenwriter, Polan- ski The sophisticated actress, who was 17 during filming, dismissed it in a recent interview with, 'Everyone knows all men like young girls.' She bears a striking resemblance to the young Ingrid Bergman.) Leigh Lawson is suavely sinister as the handsome, mustacheoed bachelor Alec; his performance stops short of a caricature of villainy, in spite of lines like, 'Once a victim, always a victim," and 'If you're any man's wife, you're mine.' Peter Firth plays Angel Clare with ingratiating charm; he brings a smoldering sensuality to his wooing of Tess, after they meet as co-workers in a dairy farm. The scene in which the gallant Care carries the giggling maidens across the flooded path to church, so that he can hold Tess in his arms, is charged with the sexual attraction between the two. All in the supporting cast are excellent (although there is a hint of self-consciousness in the young actors who portray Tess' siblings). Women may wonder, as tliey leave the theatre, whether very much has changed in relations betweeen the sexes. There is still a double standard of sexual conduct, and women, especially women of great beauty, are often regarded as sex objects, with all the dehumanization that that implies. One of the lushest scenes takes place in the expansive garden of the false d'Urbervilles where an orange-and-white-striped canopy sits on the lawn Alec takes his newfound 'cousin' for a tour, picks a large, ripe strawberry, and brings it to her mouth to accept it, and, implicitly, his domination When he later tells her, "Beauty has its price,' it is ominously prophetic The film also conjures thoughts of fate versus free will (Hardy is regarded as a fatalist) and whether one can escape mean circumstances of birth.
