USED BOOK BUYBACK BEGINS MAY 12 Funds for intramural rtcrralion art being, peeled away Mart Traf<K/l>ail> (.'olli'p.m Intramurals—Silent Sufferers By Chock Barney Daily Collegian Sports Editor i IF YOU'VE BEEN READING BOTH OF THE campus newspapers, you must have gathered by now that the Dally Collegian is a bit unhappy with the cuts made in its budget by the Associated Studenis Senate. There have been scathing editorials, rebuttals by the senators and a lot of general bad-mouthing from both sides. Well, sitting back quietly through all of this, have been the members of Fresno State's Intramural-Recreatiori Department. Their program also received a hefty cut. but so far they haven't been making much noise. "We're at the point now where we have to just work with what weVe got," says Val Valverde, interim director of the Intramural-Recreation Department. "My first reaction to the cut was one of deep displeasure but now I just feel that if that's what the senate wants, then that's what well abide by." But just because Valverde has assumed a quiet, accepting attitude, it doesn't mean she is pleased with the latest AS budget. The Recreation division of her department was actually given a S1,500 boost but Valverde says that will be soaked up quickly in salaries. She said that the Intramural Department asked the AS for $36,000. anticipating an elimination ofa S10 fee that all teams playing intramurals have to pay- The senate, instead, said that intramural participants will have to continue paying the $10 fee and wound up giving Intramurals about $25,000. When you figure that the $ 10 fees generate about $5,000, that would give the department about $30,000 to work with, which is still a hefty $6,000 short of what Intramurals had anticipated.. WHICH OF COURSE MEANS PEOPLE ARE GOING to have to suffer. The number of intramural tournaments may have to be lessened and recreation facilities are going to be as available as they have been because of limited work hours. It seems to be a major injustice, especially when you consider that more than 5,000 people played intramural sports last year and that over 32,000 people took advantage of the FSU facilities, including the pool, gymnasiums, weight rooms, racquetball courts, etc. "I don't think the AS actually sat down and set any priorities this year," says Valverde. "It looks like they didn't have any criteria. Obviously, there's not enough money to go around and everybody has to suffer, but they could have been more careful with their cuts. Our program is going to be hurt." What seems to really bother Valverde is the fact that IM participants will have to continue paying a $10 team fee. The team sports won't suffer that much because of the fee but I don't think it's fair that players should have to pay for something that is already budgeted by the AS," she says. "That fee started in 1975 as a temporary measure and ever since then we have tried to eliminate it but the AS hasn't let us." One fee that Valverde feels should be increased so that campus programs can do better financially is the $10 all students pay to the AS. "Students have been paying that same $ 10 for years," she remarked. 'And we all know-that inflation has made that $10 less and less effective. Soon, all of the programs are going to lack quality." Valverde says that the Intramural-Recreation program "is one of the better ones on campus because it provides jobs as well as year 'round activities. We do the most with the little we've got." Now. theyll have to pull on that belt just a bit tighter. STUDENTS HAVE A CHANCE TO keepthe red waving. For thefirst time ever, the Bulldog Foundation has set upa student booster category. For $10 FSU students can become a member of the powerful support group and receive some of its benefits. More important than receiving, though, is the opportunity to contribute to the continuing growth of Fresno State athletics. For more details contact BDF director Pat Ogle at 225-4140. MUSCLING UP FOR NEXT YEAR. That's what FSU wrestling coach Dennis DeLiddo is up to these days through his recruiting efforts. Del-id Jo recently had the pleasure of signing John Vega, the California Junior College champion in the 134-pound weight category. Vega—also sought by Idaho State. BYU, Long Beach Stateand Boise State—helped Cerritos Junior College toa third place team finish in the state this year. He finished first in his conference and first in the Southern Section. ITS NOT AN OCCASION FOR any big speeches or a bucketful of sentimentality, but since this is the last issue of the Collegian, this will be the last time 111 be writing one of these. (C'mon. hold down the cheers!) Just wanted to let you know that I Ve really enjoyed being close to FS U sports. We tried our best to get the stories to you and it was difficult task as we worked with only two sports writers most of the lime. That doesn't make it easy when you also have to worry about a full slate of classes and when Bulldog teams are playing all over the place. We did some very good, innovative things and then we did some things we'd like to forget. Let's just say that our intentions were always good. Thanks for reading us. Aloha. A Time For Statesmanship When the Associated Student Senate meets Tuesday at 3 p.m., we hope that it will not be seduced by a committee resolution requesting the resignation of Daily Collegian editor Wayne Agner. Adoption of this resolution would be a dangerous precedent and a violation of the students' right to a free and open press—a right guaranteed by the first Amendment. This resolution would serve only to weaken the watchdog role of the Daily Collegian. Few editors could serve the student body well with a political ax hanging over their heads. The United States Supreme Court, in the New York Times vs. Sullivan case (March 1964), said that "debate on public issues should be uninhibited, robust, and wide-open, and that it may well include vehement, caustic, and sometimes unpleasantly sharp attacks on government and public officials." We feel that the death of this resolution is necessary to defend the first Amendment rights, not only of the Daily Collegian to speak freely...but also of all students on this campus to hear all sides of all issues. ■ Denise A.
