"I don't think it's something we should do." said Kaufman, calling unsuccessfully for a vote to switch the banquet to a picnic to save money. The senate had previously set aside $400 for the awards banquet. In other actions the senate approved a $2,000 funding request from Semanade la Raza to bring Daniel Valdez and Company to campus during Semana de la Raza week. The senate also awarded a $550 speaker honorarium to the Chicano Business Students Association and accepted a $ I 35 funding request from Amerasia for rental and technical fees. The senate also approved the Keats Building contract, was tolr' if the resignation of Administrative Assistant Melinda Lehman and turned down funding requests from Phi Epsilon Omicron and the Revolving Book fund. Bulldog baseball coach Bob Bennett grinned. Bennett added Cal Cain to his growing list of rookies who are helping Fresno State this season. Cain banged out five hits in ten official trips to the plate as the' Bulldogs swept a doubleheader last night from Loyola-Marymount 15-1 and 9-3. Bennett and the 764 fans at Beiden Field had a long look at Cain and the rest of the'Dogs. Action, which got underway at about 5:30 p.m., finally ended at about 11:15. Cain included a double, a triple and his first home run as a Bulldog. He drove in five runs, four in the first game, and scored five runs. "I got good pitches to hit," Cain said, staying rather subdued in the FSU dugout. "We have this thing going with the freshmen — me, Eric (Fox) and Joe (Xavier). It feels good all three of us can contribute." Cain, a left-handed hitter, said he usually has power to right field, but got a fat fastball from Loyola pitcher Mike Seiber over the outside of the plate and Cain rode it over the left field fence. Bennett may have ended his season- long search for a consistent performer in right field. The Bulldogs have gotten good performances from Russ Hall and Art Holland, but the way Cain hit last night it would be hard to sit the freshman down. "He's worked his way into the starting lineup," Bennett said. "Hell have to work it of it." Cain had two of his hits in the opener, bu» drove in three runs to key a five-run seventh inning with a double. But the funny thing is, Cain is listed as both an outfielder and a pitcher. "He's not a bad pitcher, either," Bennett said. "He's got a chance to be a good outfielder." Cain showed s< right field. He appeared couple of balls, one of which flew over his head for extra bases. But Bennett said Cain, a product of Fresno's Hoover High School, shows "good instincts" as an outfielder. Tim Thiessen had a rare start on the mound in the first contest for the Bulldogs. He ended up going seven innings to notch his second win over year. Thiessen, normally the team's starting shortstop, had trouble in the first couple of innings, but settled down to stay pretty much out of trouble. "He hasn't pitched much and we use him down the stretch, hell have to throw more,* Bennett said.
