Ps(« S—the Daily Collegian-March 1,1982 Bulldogs chase Spartans for track title Defending San Jose favored By Leo N. Holier Daily Collegian Stan* Writer San Jose State may be favored to win the Pacific Coast Athletic Association track and field title this season, but Fresno State plans to give the Spartans a run for the money. "On paper, we're probably right behind San Jose and Irvine isfollowingus (Fresno) closely," said head coach Red Estes. "San Jose, as the defending champion, has to be considered the favorite. They are returning a good squad and have had an excellent recruiting year. "But if they slip up," he added, "Fresno or possibly even Irvine could win the whole ball of wax." Irvine got its first chance to compete against the Bulldogs Saturday in a triangular meet that included the UCLA Bruins. FSU won over the Anteaters in dual scoring, but finished thrid behind UCLA and Irvine in the triangular meet's complicated scoring system. Estes sees this yearns squad as balanced. "Wc demt have super strength in each, event." he said, "but we do have a pretty ' good performer in every event." The strength for Bulldog tracksten will come in the field events. "Definitely the hammer and the high jump are our two strongest and deepest events," Estes said. "We have three solid Jammer throwers; four-time All American Matt Mileham (23l-feet-l inch). Ron Fritzemeier( 187-0) and Scott Chappell (170-9).' hesaid. "We also have strength in our five high jumpers. All have cleared 6-IOad two can jump 7 feet," Estes said. In last Saturday's triangular meet. Bulldog Dan McNamara led FSU's five-man high jump squad with a 6-10 leap. In the long and triple jump, it will be Henry Ellard leading the Bulldog's this season. Ellard added a half-an-inch to the school's triple jump record, setting it at 53-H.5 and took third in the long jump with a 23-11.5 mark. The sprints, have improved with freshman George Ervin looking "very strong." according to Estes. PCAA 800 meter-run champion. Fresno's Ron Arnold, will return to run in the middle distances. "I expect Ron to have an even better year thisseason." Estes said. Arnold will be running a leg of the 1600 meter relay and may compete as a runner in the 1500 meter run for dual meet competition. Arnold took third at the Los Angeles tri-meel in the 800 meter run, recording a 1.51.58. scott Mayficld. the top runner on Fresno's PCAA-winning cross-country squad, will be handling the longer 5.000-10,000 meter steeplechases. In the two-mile run. Mayfield finished fourth in L.A. with 8.50.8. breaking FSU's old record of 8.51.4. In the 110 high hurdles and 400 intermediate hurdles, FSU has depth. "Our number-one high hurdler is Frank Williamson at 14.4. but our decahtlete Pete Mansur could challenge Williamson for that position." Estes said. In the intermediate hurdles. Williamson is again the team leader at S3.17. "Mike DeBusk. a transfer from Fresno City College, has run in the S3s and has potential to do better than that." Estes said. The only weak area Estes sees is in the shot put. But Estes cites returning Dave Crow as improving. "He was hitting 52-2 last season, but in practice he's shooting 52-8 and I think hell be reaching 54 feet by season's end," Estes said. Crow finished third in Los Angeles and set a personal high, tossing 52-11.5, Estes' young team doesn't bother him. . For the past few years, there has been no question about Fresno State's ability to win on the softball diamond. The Lady Bulldogs have finished second the in the Northern California Athletic Conference-^ (he past three years in succession. The only problem is the team that has won it those three seasons has been California. Avila said Ward has the better bat of the three. She added whoever has the hottest bat at the time will win out. The same holds for the rest of the ball- club. Avila said the team is rich in defensive skillsvso offense will be a determining factor in Tilling out the lineup card. "Defensively, the girls are all pretty equal, so whoever has the hot bat will start,* Avila said. The Bulldogs were a young team last season and that youth translates to experience in a year. In fact what seemed like a talented but green lineup last season is simply talented in 1982. "Catch-22" situation, as it did Merced. If the defense tries for a pick-off on the runner going to second, the runner at third can try for the plate. And the vice versa istrue. Fresno worked Merced for at least two runs.off that tactic Wednesday. That is something we will use automatically this year." Avila said. "In fact, we will try to be more aggressive on the base paths." Avila said the Bulldogs area confident lot this year and that will be a plus for Fresno. The Bulldogs have not done much extensive recruiting, at least outside the San Joaquin Valley. Avila said the recruiting efforts are pretty much limited to the area between Stockton and Bakersfteld because oflimited finances. She said, because softball is still a minor sport at Fresno State, there is not enough money to hunt out-of-state talent or even that out of the San Joaquin Valley. 'But the valley has a lot of talent — most of these girls are from the valley.' Avila said. The Bulldogs opened play by sweeping a pair of doubleheaders from Southern California and Northridge State over the weekend. 'This year we have the team, that can beat them.Jt will be Berkeley and Fresno at the top.' This year, 1 think we have the team that can beat them," Bulldog assistant coach Barbara Avila said. Avila said one of the main goats for the ballclub is getting past Cal and taking the NorCal title. "It will be Berkeley and Fresno at the top," Avila proclaimed ' , She noted Cat's top player as being pitcher Leslie Parch, who has been frustrating hitters in the NorCal for the past three seasons. "If they cant hit her by now ...."Avila chuckled. The Bears are not the only task facing Fresno. Avila said the team set out to improve its hitting and depth this season. And FSU probably has done that. The two positions Fresno has touched up are pitcher and third base. Neither has been a problem where the front liners were concerned. Wende Ward is a legitimate all-American candidate for the Bulldogs on the mound and she even plays third when she is not pitching. Last season, those times were relatively rare, as Ward pitched in most every Fresno game. For 1982. the Bulldogs picked up hurler Barbara Cambria to share the pitching duties with Ward. Cambria, a sophomore, looked sharp when the Bulldogs pounded Merced College in an exhibition contest Wednesday. At third the lady 'Dogs have a glut. Roberta Garcia and Deby Kellogg will vie forthe position when Ward is not pitching. Denise Kctcham will share catching duties with transfer Denise Fabris this year. Kctcham can be considered one of the top backstops in the conference. Edna Figueroa returns for duty at first base and scrappy Janee Silva will be at shortstop again. Silva will team with Sandi Taylor at the keystone corner. Avila said four players will be shooting for spots in the outfield. They include Renee Polanco and Alyce Rodriguez, who looked good in the Merced game. Garcia. Silva and Kctcham have shown ' aggressive play on the bascpaths. part of the "new look" for the Bulldogs this season.
