Health Pure 6—the Daily Collegian-March 26, 1982 Self-examinations could prevent breast cancer By Dianna Costa, RN, FNP Special to the Daily Collegian Breast cancer in some ways touches almost everyone. About 108.000 women in the United States will develop breast cancer this year and about one woman in every 13 will develop the disease at sometime during her lifetime. It usually strikes women over the age of 30. but younger women and even men develop this disease. For you. and for those people special to you. it is important to learn self-breast examination and to know the proper signs and symptoms to look for. You should examine your breasts monthly, shortly after your menstrual period. This is the lime when your breasts are least likely to be influenced by cyclic hormones. The following is a three-step procedure to check your own breasts: I) Feel them while you are bathing or showering; fingers glide more easily over wet skin. Ise the right hand to examine the left breast, and the left hand for the right breast; 2) Look at them in the mirror. Inspect your breasts with arms at your sides and then raise your arms high over head. Look for any changes in contour of each breast, a swelling, dimpling of the skin or changes in the nipple; 3) Examine your breasts lying down. Place your right hand behind your head and with your left hand, fingers Hat. press gently in small circular motions around in an imaginary clock face. Fernandez is presently a faculty member at the University of California. Santa Cruz. She is a native of Cuba and has performed solos and duos in Cuba. Mex ico. Europe and the United Slates. Sparrow is head of the piano department at Stanford University and champions new music styles. Formerly a faculty member at Mills College, she was a founding member of the Mills Performing Group. Selections the women will perform include "En Blanc et Noir" by Debussy and "Concerto per Due Pianoforti Soli" by- Stravinsky. Works by Messiaen and Lutoslawski will also be presented. around and circle back to 12. Then move slightly toward the nipple, and keep circling 10 examine every part of your breast including nipple. This usually requires at least three more circles. Now repeal for the left breast. Finally, check each nipple by very gently squeezing between thumb and index finger to detect any discharge. Breast lumps vary greatly in the way ihcy feel. The smallest lump which you may be able to detect would be about the size of a pea. It may be rubbery, like an eraser, or firm IM hard like wood. Over 80 percent of breast lumps found arc benign cysts or collections of fluid (not cancerous), of which most will disappear within a month or.so. If you find a lump, nipple discharge or oihcr changes in your breast, seek help from your doctor or your nurse prac- tioner. Feel free to come to the Health Center with any questions you may have.
