March 1,1982—the Daily Collepan-Paje 7 Sports 'Dogs look for victory in PCAA tournament By Chock Barney Daily Collegian Sports Editor And now, the 'third season.* The Fresno State basketball team breezed through its pre-conference season with a I l-l record and then finished the PCAA regular season with a 13-1 mark after beating Utah State, 73-61, last Sat- But now none of that matters. It's time for the Bulldogs to go out and prove themselves all over again. The test for FSU will begin Thursday night in Anaheim when the Bulldogs take on their first opponent in the PCAA postseason tournament. If Fresno prevails in that game. Coach Boyd Grant's squad will play for the championship Friday night. "Wait a minute," some of you may be saying. "Didn't the Bulldogs just win the PCAA championship by beating the University of Pacific last Thursday in Stock-' ton? Shoot, UC Irvine is the closest team to Fresno State and the Anteaters have FOU R conference losses. What is this bit about about a tournament?" . Ok, Ok, we admit it sounds a bit funny but for seven years now, the PCAA has held a get-together at the end of the regular season to determine which of its teams "Dogs.Jinishing with their best PCAA mark ever.' will go on to the prestigious NCAA tournament. Instead of rewarding its regular- season champ with that honor, the conference puts it through the ringer once again for the sake of the almighty dollar. So. who knows? Maybe two weeks from now, we could be watching the hapless Utah State Aggies (4-22 on the season) competing with college basketball's best on national TV. Wouldn't the PC A A feel funny then.? The PCAA tournament will actually get under way Wednesday night at the Anaheim Convention Center but the Bulldogs were given a first-round bye, the one reward they received for finishing with their best PCAA mark ever. They wouldn't have even got that, though, if UC Santa Barbara hadn't been ruled ineligible for the post-season affair. In the first-round, contests, second- seeded UC Irvine will take on lowest seeded Utah State while Cai State Fuller- ton meets UOP and Long Beach Sutc faces San Jose State. The latter game will be day one's nightcap and could be the most interesting contest. If Fresno State does lose in the tournament, most observers feel that the Bulldogs will receive an NCAA bid anyway because of their lofty record and national ranking. At the beginnign of this week, the Dogs were ranked 14thbyAPand 12thby UPI. "Nothing is ever for sure, though," says Grant. "Last year we beat San Jose in the tournament final and I thought San Jose should have received a berth too but they didn't. You want to wtiuhe tournament." The NCAA selection committee will meet next Sunday to decide on the 48 teams that will make up the national tournament which will wind down to the Final Four in the Louisiana Supcrdome. There will be 20 at large berths available and the rest of the field will be occupied by automatic qualifiers as determined by conference champions and post-season tournaments. Until the post-season action begins, though, Fresno State fans can take some time to savor their team's regular season accomplishments. And what a season it was—Fresno's best regular season ever. The Bulldogs only stumbled twice during their 26-game schedule. They fell to the then-ranked Cajuns of Southwest Louisiana (57-51) in the finals of the Cajon's own tournament. The Bulldogs then won 12 straight before losing to Long Beach State. 45-42, in overtime while possibly looking forward to their matchup with UC Irvine. FSU avenged that lone PCAA loss by topping Long Beach, 54-45, the very next week. Highlights of the regular season were wins over Mississippi (46-44), New Mexico State (48-41), Lamar (56-36). WCAC champion Peppcrdine (63-46) and two victories over Irvine, the team picked to dethrone the Bulldogs this year. The BUIIdogs went undefeated on their home grounds this year, posting a 15-0 record at Selland Arena. Grant won his 100th Fresno State'victory at home (against UC Santa Barbara)and the seven FSU seniors celebrated their final game a Grant's Tomb with a 71-51 blowout over Fullerton. y-~> vmmmrii Bulldog softball shows strong pitching force By Jeff Domingues Daily Collcgun SlafT Writer The Bulldog softball team used the pitching performances of Wende Ward and Barbara Cambria to take a pair of doubleheaders over the weekend. Fresno State shut down the Northridge State Matadors 4-0 and 2-0 Saturday after whipping Southern California Friday 7-0 and 9-0. \ Ward was at her best Saturday in firing a one-hitter and striking out eight in the first game. Cambria did not have her best stuff, but still blanked the Matadors with the help of some clutch, if not solid, defense. Edna Figueroa blasted out of some minor hitting doldrums with two hits and three runs batted in in the opener. The .Bulldogs struck early, tallying two runs.ro the first inning. Shortstop Janee Silva opened by drawing a walk from CSUN pitcher Sue Oran and went to second on a single by Ward. Roberta Garcia moved the runners over with a bunt. One out later centerfielder Kim Mura- tore walked to load the bags and right- fielder Re'nee Polanco walked to force in Silva. Figueroa singled up the middle to chase Ward. Garcia singled to open the third and went to third when Matador leftfielder Linda Luwanda threw the ball away. Two outs later Polanco drew her second of three walks in the game and Figueroa drove both girls in with a line single to the right-center field alley, giving FSU a 4-0 lead they would never relinquish. Fresno put runners in scoring position with three hits in the sixth, but second baseman Sandi Taylor popped out to kill the threat. Ward was never threatened as only one.
