Peeyr-^gr, CSUF Athletics budget to exceed $1 million B> Sieve Kipp DaBy CaBegian Staff Reporter Inflation and an increased emphasis on CSUF sports has brought the Athletic Authority budget level to a point where it will extend past the million dollar figure by the 19B243 school year The 197*40 budget took a 10 9 per cent hike oyer last year, bringing the total figure budgeted for collegiate sports. sports administration, and sports infor rnationto$754,173 A breakdown in the expenditures shows that men s CSUF sports compet ing in the NCAA •« about half of the total amount budgeted ($373 018), which : IA 101 3 15, CU Lounge 7 15.9 15, 11 1S is a two percent increase over last year Women's sports (AIAW) has taken a 73 percent boost as it is getting 146,414 while the costs of sports administration ($255,114) and sports information (579,627) total the rest of the operating expenses Sports information is, of course, the publicizing done on col teg iate sports events The resources which will be utilized to meet the demands of the budget actually exceeds it with a surplus of $14..289 The surplus, however, will be going towards the needed additional purchase of two vans not figured Into the budget The costs will run about $25,000 for the vans CSUF sports generated $655,062 in revenues last year and will take care of most of the expenditures The remaining resources include $94,000 from ins true tionalrv related activities fees ond $19:400 from Associated Students The budget, before being finalized, had to meet the approval at the Advisory Board, Athletic Authority Board and the CSUF President after initially being recommended by the athletic director, who gathered figures from CSUF coaches and others involved The near 11 percent total increase in the Budget was a foreseen occurrence as the increase has been moving at a steady rate the past few years Those involved m the budget process realize, however, that coming up with the resources to support such an increase in future years will become on impossible task without taking drastic steps Cayford 'Cus' Craham the CSUF Assistant Executive Vice President, pointed out the only ways tc meet the demands within the noor future 'There's only two ways to come up with more revenue," Craham said 'One, is to encourage people to give us more than they have been and two is to generate revenue through the new RECYOf YOUR ALUMINUM CANS G€T THE HIGHEST PRICE IN TOWNI 24' ,b. Phone 265-5690 stadium ' Craham recognized that CSUF dona tions have already been coming in close to its potential peak Donations from the Bulldog Foundation presently take care of scholarship and recruiting expenses This year s total donation figure was $269,574, as men's sports received a 4 percent boost in scholarships while women' s athaetk scholarships jumped 44 percent this year Revenue-encouraging actions have already been taken by Athletic Director Jack Wilcox Wilcox, seeing some of the women ' s sports as future money-making sources, has angled this year s budget in that direction A short-term action was taken involving the women s volleyball team 'With Mickey Horn on the team this year, I don t see why the team couldn t draw 1,500 to 2,000 people at its home matches this season,' Wilcox said 'So we've moved them from the women s gym to the men's gym and beefed up the lights ' Wilcox goal is to lessen the load that football and men s basketball carries for the rest of the sports 'It's going to be hard for me to be a responsible person by saying this sport has to go,' he said in reference to the future, where the only course oi action might turn out to be eliminating certain sports 'The only way to hold onto them,* Wilcox saad, 'is to make them have some payroll potential ' Wilcox named soccer and women s basketball and volleyball as those he believes in joining the tone two sports which get into the black Wilcox sees a great potential in soccer once the stadium is built due to CSUF competing in what' s widely accepted to be the No 1 collegiate league in the nation Craham commented that he believes soccer is '10 years away' trom advancing into the black, 'according to what keep being told ' Wilcox is working to create women basketball and volleyball as money makers by giving the sports mo* scholarships to work with Wilcox h* the final say on where to distribute th scholarships and the two above nisa tioned women' s sports had the biggaa gain 'I'm leaning more towards a balance program,* Wilcox said 'I have IB sport to consider but I believe we can w with volleyball and (women s) basi ball and build them up through ( motional ideas " With football and men s basketfaej being the oply two money -product*! sports, they claimed the biggest chunl of the NCAA budgeted figure with f. ball getting $167 858 and basket receiving $120,027 Both sports rece. substantial increases as there is a 'don T bite the hand that feeds you.' attitugj among those behind the budgeting 'I was involved in the theater for yeen and it was the same way.'
