Pick up applications in CU. 302 Deadline is Sept 21 at 5:00. its older counterpart the facility now in use will easily accomodate the university community's every academic whim According to Mrs Annie Parker, wtK> took Orv*r as university librarian Saturday replacing Henry Madden, the facility will provide increased seating and study areas, space for up to 520.000 volumes, more typing rooms, a separate map library, a larger music library and increased facilities for handicapped students among others The addition will be 'convienent and attractive to use,' Mrs Parker said The four-story addition will be attached to the south side of the present facility on two floors with enclosed walkways Construction costs ar* expected to *5 2 mcfUen and arradditjooei I has been ghWated to equip the new building According to Dr Marvin B Wampler, executive dean, the board oi trustees is preparing to take action to go on record requesting an additional $525,000 for more equipment and remodeling oi the older facility 'We would expect rt (the additional allocation) to be in the governor's budget next January.' FRESNO use will total some 210.00 square feet of space for library purposes on campus When the two buildings are coupled, the library will be operated as one facility The addition is equipped only with emergency exits and the main entrance to the library will remain at or n*ar its present locat too depending or eventual remodeling plans Wampler said the original library was built for roughly 6 000 students and has seating for 56** in space intended for 364 The addition will provide seating space for 2,600 students Wampler said the university has been working since 1970 to build the addition In July 1972 an archetitect was given the go ahead to begin designing the facility Enrollment predictions were higher in those days and some funding cuts were absorbed, rausing the architect to have to pare down and revise his design three times before gaining approval Con struction finally began in January of 1978 'There's lots of different steps invol- ved,' Wampler sasd The present facility was constructed in two segments The east section was completed in March 1956 and the west portion in J uly 1965 C.U.
