And. the lyrics are definitely playing a secondary role tbla Ume out. Instead, we have Peter sitting down at the VCS 3 organ and an ARP/Tonus synthesizer and finally proving to the world at large that the synthesizer lsboth a human Instrument and one eminently suited to rock and roll. From the sound of things, h. seems to have been listening a lot to Terry RUey; and it's made a salutary change ln the Who's sound. Of e the one where t comes together, ls the eight- minute expansion of the hit, •Won't Get Fooled Again,* a poUUcal parable for th. Seventies. I don't have to teU yon to get this album - you probably hav. lt already. The only thing wrong with supersessions Is they're boring. You get a bunch of superstars together in a studio and they try and outshout each other. It may have been fun for them, but on vinyl only the boredom comes That's why I was so surprised to hear the newest In the super- crop, 'The Howlln' Wolf London Session" (Chess CH-60008). In a word, it's good. No - better than that. It's REAL good. In fact, lt may be even better than that but it's too early to tell - I've only had lt for a Uttle while. The supers Involved (besides Wolf, natch) Include Eric Clapton, Stevle Wlnwcod.BlUWyman, Charlie Watts, Rlngo Starr, Mick Jagger, John Simon, Ian Stewart and Phll Upchurch, and what really makes the session super ls that they're there with only one purpose ln mind - to provide the best possible backup for the Wolf. They succeed admirably. AU or Wolf, biggest songs are here - 'I Ain't Superstitious,' •atUn' On Top Of Th. World,* •Built For Comfort,' 'Red Rooster,' "Wang Dang Doodle,' and more, and they haven't sound- Well hazy, hazy. Mulligan 1. lazy. He over-uses this one cinematic device of grainy photography so no one would have any doubt that the ex-homy kid ls remembering aU of thla. To capture the mood of a certain era, and even more Important, to convey the feeling of remembrance through varied and Interesting cinematic device., la a hard task. It ls worthy of a by using the very devices that were utilized In the films made during that era. He also re- Introduces the concept of cinematic expression through lighting that seems to be forgotten by most of the contemporary directors.
