-^ THE DAILY COLLEGIAN Friday Fresno State sports away this weekend Bailey st\s frosh scoring records By Chuck Knox Fresno State sports fans get to take the weekend off, unless they want to drive three or four hours to the Bay area or Los Angeles. While the past two Fridays and Saturdays have featured as many as four • ranis »day, all the action Is out of town this weekend. TMS just might be the Ume you want to go skiing or visit your aunt in Morro Bay. The most Important competition for the Bulldogs today and tomorrow Is the conference swim championships and the NCAA re- rlonal wrestling tournament. First, In wrestling, Rey Contreras and Gene Hansen are representing Fresno State at Pullman, Wash., for the District 8 (West Coast) regional meet. The two talented seniors will be hoping to place high enough tn the tournament to gain a trip to the NCAA nationals at Auburn the following week. Cal Stale Long Beach, which Is ranked fifth nationally and holds 15 of 18. conference records,Is the strong favorite to repeat its swimming championship. The Forty-Ntners, who have nine Olympians on their team, has already defeated In dual competition the second best team, UOP, The Bulldogs' Coleman Montgomery and Mike McMUlen are given the best chance to place high tn the meet. McMUlen wlU go In the 1650 and 1000 yard freestyle events while Montgomery's specialty Is the 200 and 400 yard Individual medley and the 200 yard butterfly. Both swim- Fresno will also send Its top 800 yard free relay team consisting of Tim Ledford, Tom Ettleson, Montgomery and McMlUen. The basebaU team plays UC Berkeley today and Stanford to- > Dick Ruthven (4-0) and Dan Grimm (1-0). Ruthven and Grimm both wlU be working to continue their shutout streaks of 26 and 18 consecutive shutout innings pitched respectively. The golfers are one of nine teams taking part In the annual Cal State Los Angeles Invitational at the El NIgula Country Club at Laguna Beach. The tournament Includes 36 holes played today with 18 on Saturday. FSC will be trying to bounce back from their first dual match loss In two years that they suffered to Cal Poly 14-I31astweek at the wind-blown Fort Washington Country Club. The track squad travels to Palo Alto for Its first Intercollegiate action of the year. Hosting the triangular meet is Stanford who will entertain Occidental College besides the Bulldogs. Duane Ballard's tennis Charles Bailey, a O-foot-C forward from Nashville, N.C., set two Fresno State freshman basketball records during the past The former high school all- state selection broke the single game record of 41 points with 43 against Teft J.C. and pumped In 498 points In 23 games for a new season scoring mark. Clarence Metcalfe, now a varsity letter- man, held the previous single- game record while the old season standard was 458 points scored by Sam Jackson during 1968-69. Neal McCoy, a 7-1 center from Sacramento, pulled down 246 rebounds to edge Bailey's 244 total boards. Tom Pepper, a 6-5 forward from Lodl, was third with 163 of the most Improved players at th* eajd of thauseason. The Sacramento product had 342 total points In concerting from a forward position.
