Full-time enrollment below projections Collegian Staff Writer No Fresno State CoUege faculty members will be fired Immediately as a result of a significant drop In the projected number of full-time equivalent students during the fall 1971 semester. The picture for next spring and the 1971-72academlcyearlsstlU Dr. Harold Haak, FSC academic vice president, made the a press conference yesterday stating, «... At this point, we have no reason to believe that the faculty will have Ir employment Jeopardized by this situation.* Fear over possible firings had been expressed as a result of final enrollment figures for the n 10 p : In the ll-tlme fall of more I planned I equivalent students for I fund-, had bean requested. The concept of a full-time I equivalent (FTE) is based on the assumption that the normal student Is Using 15 credit units. The full-lime equivalent figure, which for this semester is 12,830, was calculated by dividing the total number of units taken by 15. Several part-time students might be lumped together to equal one FTE The actual number of students enrolled at FSC Is up 1,146 over spring 1971 to 14,858. However many students appear to be taking lighter class loads. The drop In projected FTE's wlU probably mean budget cuts for FSC if the lowered enroU- ment becomes a trend. Immediate cuts are not likely, because the state college system as a whole has a tolerance of two per cent to allow for unexpected drops in student population. The enrollment throughout the system appears to be Increasing, which would take up the slack of FSC's coUege. These students need the same services; counseling, advising, and processing of registration materials, as the full- time student, but the legislature appropriates no compensating funds, due to the emphasis on the full-time equivalent method of computation. Commenting on this situation, Haak stated, *Our great concern Is to try to maintain educational quality and attempt to keep our faculty morale up. It will require redoubled efforts on the part of a faculty which has not had salary Increases for two years and has serious types of morals problems. For students, It can mean difficulties for us In trying to maintain educational quality.* . AS to faculty cuts for the spring semester and next fall, Haak makes no commitments until a Joint meeting next Friday of the Academic Policy r " " Committee, the Admls Committee, and the Budget Commltt** studies the possible Implications of the enrollment data What is the cause of the drop In FTE's? The Office of Institutional Research is studying the problem. Tha students are being polled to pinpoint the reasons why they are t-iking fewer boors, according to Haak. Other schools in tha «tat* college system and nationwide will be scrutinized as well, to sew if they have bad similar problems. Robert Board, FSC registrar, has Indicated that tha problem is nationwide. The University of California had an Increase of only -the draft lottery system. Male students with high lottery numbers do not feal compelled to take a full load to keep their stunt deferments. -the generally depressed eco- " ». m admissions pro gram, which handles all applicants to th* state college system. This is the first year It has been used. There may be some adjustments that FSC needs to make to Insure a larger number of FTE -FSC instituted this semester and withdrawing from classes. Students may be dropping classes because lt is easier than before. Whatever the causes may be, Haak Is currently concerned Owl the trend toward overestimating the number of FTE students not become permanent. A sustained drop would definitely lead to budget cuts for FSC. The coUege master plan and based on a growth rate of approximately 1,000 FTE students a year. Although the FTE rate rose slightly, lt was considerably short of the projected number, a continued lag behind the planned growth could bar* *long rang* implications,* according to Haak.
