NtiBliV LY COLLEGIAN EDITORIALS Student Court appointment Yesterday a surrealistic production of 'The pled Piper* was put on by the Fresno State College Associated Student Senate. Piper (and Second Vice-President) Terry Stone carried the magic flute of the Jones admlnlstraUon and made a majority of the senate follow (to such Important committees as Financial Aids, Campus Life, and Housing) and, almost without question, they were approved. The trouble came, however, with the Student Court appointment of an un- To my knowledge Mr. Powell (who was later appointed) ls a fairly good man for the post. The problem lies, however, ln the fact that the senate should demand more knowledge about him and demand to be confronted with a choice for this post, one of the potentially most Important ln student government at this time. His name was brought up and Stone expected the senate to approve him without so much as enough time for ample debate. The Student Court has the final say ln elections, student discipline, and student grievance procedures. Its members are appointed for two-rear terms and cannot be Impeached. The potential Importance of this year's student court ls that It must may be the first time ln iv year; the Jones student administration orders ls a disservice to both the concept of a free student government and an abridgement of the responsibilities each senator holds to his constituency. Recent statements by Earle Bassett, general manager of the Association, tend to warrant the concern. Bassett has made 11 clear appropriation of funds for any purpose *no> specifically granted under Title V of the CaUfornla Administrative Code" cannot be authorized by the Board of Directors. A quick glance at Section 42659 of Title V, 'Approved Uses ot Student Body Organization Funds*, reveals there ls no specific mention of legal aid funds to combat violations of student rights. Because of Its certain death by the Board of Directors and other disturbing features, It ls likely Sherwood's resolution will be jireatly modified before Its passage next week. What matters, however, (and Sherwood will probably be the first to agree) ls that the senate do something ln the way of legal defense for the student body. Whatever shape the new Institutions take, It ls Imperative the senate give concrete expression to principles Inherent ln the resolution.
