—The Fresno State College Collegiar EDITORIAL COfAMENTS Our Amateur Band' Fresno State College's band is to be congratulated for the fine performance during halftime of Saturday's game. Many observers commented that the halftime show was almost as spectacular as the-game itself. The band's performance equalled that of any of the larger universities' which are seen on the TV Game of the Week! And FSC is considered a small time school. The band's performances to date are not indicative of the small time approach that FSC has toward athletics. Small time athletics are fine—they are as exciting' as big time shows, and they are beginning to gain the attention of the Even though the FSC ban big time "Class," it is operated Director Dean Killion says his outfit is one of the few amateur college bands in the US. . "Recruiting for band members is almost as bad as that for football players," Killion once said. "I know that Arizona State at Tempe gives most of its band members up to $300 in scholarships. We don't give our band members anything Killion's only complaint about the band is that it is made up of too many music majors. He feels that band membership is for the whole school, not just the music department "We have to prod our music majors to join the band," he explained. They like to play but they don't like to march. They are like musicians anywhere. "Cal Poly has a fine band of around 70 pieces, but the school has no music department. We could have a darned good band if we could get that many non-music majors out." So amateurism runs rampant at FSC. Neither the band members or the athletic team members are being compen-l sated for the grueling hours spent on the practice field. The results of the efforts on both fields arc pleasing. And they make us proud.
