The only difference between the Indentured servant and a slave waa the lenght of servitude. The sa stem of white slavery came to America with the first immigrant*. Most of the pioneer Virginia settlers wore slaves of the Virginia Company, which banned private property and ruled by artial law. When the Puritans came, they began their crusade tor freedom h\ enslaving a large number of white men. A little while later the colony of Massachusetts openly semen ced men to slavery tor penal offense*. By 1642 six men were sentenced to slsvery for various offenses. Bv the end of the 17th century, tow Indiana wore reduced to slavery and the colonial, masters were relying heavily on the poor white* of Europe.
