'Sacred Cow' Lost
Education is no longer a "sacred cow."
The advent of the Russian sputniks kicked
the lofty perch of worshipped subjects. Some educatoi
not see this, however, and they contend that the old "modern
education" methods arc still all right.
In a recent panel discussion field on the Fresno State College campus, local educators criticised teacher training methods and courses. This panel was reported to The Collegian by
writer Tom Emery.
Thus far two FSC education professors have written letters
to The Collegian saying they got a raw deal. One was a panel
participant, the other was not.
The participant, Dr. Ralph F. Evans, declared in Monday's
paper that he was doing his best to train competent teachers.
The other professor, Maurice P. Hunt, declared in today's
edition that Emery's report was wrong.
He did not stop at that. He went on to blast the newspaper
and to question Emery's competency. A low point for a
"respected" educator of educators was reached by Hunt.
Hunt asks of the ethics of The Collegian editors for printing an "inaccurate" article. Apparently he has no'idea of
ethics within his profession, because by questioning the
ethics of the editors and of Emery, is to question the abilities
of FSC's journalism faculty. To criticise or question the
abilities of another educator is as unethical in the field of |
teaching as it is in law and in medicine.
Hunt has found fault with The Collegian Iwfore
points. He was quickly corrected, but would admit n(
his part. If he would like to run The Collegian, we
he would lie welcome to try it. He would be given due credit |
for anything good he did. but he would also get credit for any
thing wrong he did. In other words, he will receive the snmi
credit that the editors get.
