EDITORIAL COMMENTS Algerian Policy Needed The time has come for a revamping of the United States' North African foreign poli One simple question is posed by events on that continent at present: should Algeria gain independence or France retain control of it ? The United States has adopted a neutral position dispute. It supposedly cannot come out in favor of Algerian independence for fear of alienating its North Atlantic Treatv Organization ally. On the other hand, if America does not support Algerian independence, it stands the risk of losing not only Algeria but also all of North Africa to the Soviet bloc. There also is the possibility, if such a stand is taken, that repercussion would spread through the entire Afro- Asian world. When an economical means of converting seaj water to fresh water is found, all the Afro-Asian com could be turned into giant food producing nations. However, if the United States does not come out in port of Algerian independence, nearly all of Africa and Asia may be lost to the Communist bloc. What chance woul western world then have against Communism? Action must come soon. A logical solution to the problem is for a date to be set by the United Nations for Algerian independence.
