JACK POMEROY — ^remininities — With the beginning of May comes the final stretch in a strenuous race for knowledge and Sradc-s anil the last lap in a series of school activities that include student body elections, the Blue Key Carnival and West Coast Relays! Another activity now under way is the last production of the L'SPII, "Ladies in Retirement." a drama of crime and the workings of insane hjinds. which promises thrills and spi " "bforplayh GRIN AND BEAR IT By Lichty THE OTHER SIDE ol dcalinc in inistruths and personalities by a handful of pcr>ons who are out to belittle the Rally Committee and its chairman. John Olson. The "smear" technique used by this small group of sensationalists and political opportunists has ken t.' pose behind the front of a "constructive-" constitutional amendment engineered by a minority clique in student council to "uplift anJ improve" the Rally Committee. The chief mouthpiece in the campaign to "get Olson" has been the acid writings in this editorial column of a certain vituperous Mr. Clifford who has made no bones of his long-standing grudge against the redmen" as a group and Olson in particular. His plea in last Fridays editorial to do away with a little bit of that smug ptidc jnj sanctimonious priggishncss in the Rally Committee" demonstrates the bickering and IC-cillinc used „ clcvat of the- red devils." This same helpfulness is evidenced in the absurdity of Clifford's reasoning in advocating the slash in the committee's membership. He says Absurd is the fact that 25 persons could all work with the equal vim and vigor of Olson; somewhat more logical is the fact that 16 might have a little more individualism and drive than a larger number." Clifford could indeed startle President Roosevelt and solve the nation's wartime shortage of manpower at the same time if he were to present to tMe government his new theory on labor: "That one man can do more work than two because that man is all pepped up since he is good enough to replace two." This theory is concrete proof of the dynamic . genius of the "smear" group; such an idea could be generated only in mammoth, logical minds. The disgruntled Mr. Clifford claims that the rally boys have done nothing since football season except sell a few Spring Swing tickets. Yes, they did sell Spring Swing tickets—in answer to a hurry-up SOS from the public relations department, where someone was" frightened by the lag in early ticket sales. The committee, playing the same rescue role it has played time and time again, jumped' in on THREE days' notice and saw that the remainder of the general admission tickets were sold. Nothing since football season? Clifford seems to have overlooked the stag dances sponsored by the committee after basketball games and the preparations for the Masque Ball, just completed. And the plans are now being made by the committee to organize and decorate the student rooting section- at the West Coast Relays. Clifford decries Olson for not "reporting on his activities in doing something about the baseball and track situation" until after the schedule In order to bolster community attendance at these two sports, the Rally Committee, Olson has announced, offered early in the season to distribute throughout the business section of town stickers listing the schedule of spring athletic events. However, the public relations department and the student public relations committee, of which Clifford is chairman, could not find a correct and complete schedule between them.' The Rally Committee's suggestion was Tune after time the rallymen have taken a "kicking" from higherups bccausc-thcy have not kept the college running right in troubled times when enrollment and wartime problems must be faced. No one meeting these requirements was in sight — no one. except a dark, not bail looking, but very short soldier. Yes. he was following her, an ex- pectant smile on his face as he reached her, put out his arms and began to dance. She smiled wryly to herself as she looked down at his thick black head of hair a few inches below her own, and cussed herself roundly for her oversight— for in the shadows out in the hall, the "short one" had been standing on a step when she had first received the impression that he was "at least six feet tall." From the columns of another college paper, we quote this bit: "Sparking while you're parking" is now- tagged as "tire conservation." A jalopyless future is seen unless students double and triple dates to save wear on tires and automobiles. "Three for Victory" or "Six can ride with as little rubber used as one," is the theme of the ration office's appeal. ejCetleri to lite £jil lined w »bly by Mr. Clifford), could i tft beyond my koowlediee. They «re ■■has-a. not be blamed for slipups on the part of others in the administration. / No, Clifford's charges that the Rally Commit tees chief" occupations are "social hee-haws" and "buck passing" are figments of some frustrated idea of his. The social butterflies and deadheads are better represented elsewhere in the student committee setup than on the Rally Committee. If Mr. Clifford worried more about his public relations job'of getting valley high school students interested in Fresno State instead of using his fine vocabulary to heap scorn on the "red- men," the college would no doubt benefit as a consequence. No, the ballot tomorrow is not a question of strengthening or weakening the Rally Committee, but instead will demonstrate whether students will " fall for" these personality-inspired attacks or whether they will give the present Rally Committee the voce of confidence it deserves. —Otvembj, Assistant Editor, Fall, '41.
