—The Fresno Stale College Collegion- EDITORIAL COMMENTS This Is College Football College football is the object of much kidding in fun and serious criticism among the public Some people are convinced that everyone who plays football does it for personal gain, the much-talked about financial deposit or the new c from the alumni. On the other hand, we find the rabid football fan who firm in the belief that everyone on the field is giving it t "old college try." Neither is entirely correct, but we'll stick chiefly with the latter opinion. We believe that most coaches wi)l testify that players in genera1 do give it the "old college try." Many co - lege players may not show the desire outwardly, but if they didn't hive some inner desire to play football, why wouldn'f they quit? They have nothing to lose. Football is a game which demands, from the players a desire to do the job, both for the satisfaction of the individual player and for the welfare of the team. There is much credence in the belief that desire, attitude, guts or pride—whatever you wish to call it—is what makes a good team. These are the items which make a good team and these are the items which football players have a chance to develop. These qualities which can be simply defined as doing your best at all times can be the best lesson a person can take into life and hold on to. / For the team which loses in football, we must remember | that some boys have the physical talents and others don't, that some boys haven't learned the idea of playing hard all the time; that previous losses or the current game being| played may discourage or inspire a team or that one team may play just a little harder than another. ■> I From football, a boy truly learns the give-and-take which i life as a whole embodies. No matter which team is winning, the members of the teams are learning either consciously or | unconsciously, some qualities in general, and in particular, to j stick with it and do your best. That deep down admiration for a good football player or the recognition of the "old college try" phase of football is the chief enjoyment a football fan can realize;—when the | backfield man congratulates the lineman for making a good block, when the defensive men shout encouragement to "hold j that line" or the player saying "we have to score ... or we have to hold them," even though the game may be won by the other team and the score 35-0.
