|To *he Freshmen E We wish ro ask a^cjuesrion. Why are you r coming to college? ' During the next four years you, as freshmen, haye the right 10 expect the best time of your life. You will probably choose the partner with whom you will spend the rest of your life. You will develop the distinguishing traits of your ' character. You will become the intimate friend of many whom you meet. Yet these arc things which might just as ' well be obtained at some other place than college, and with a great deal less expense. There ist'bc Something else, then, which we have overlooked in our search for the intrinsic values of higher education Do you expect fame, fortune, and prestige to come your way? Are you enrolled because you expect an education to make a man of you? Or ate you here simply because Mom and Dad sent you?—If you are.in college for any of these reasons and nothing ing backwards into the future! You will always be turning to your old friends and acquain- s, expecting tbem io solve your problems in the future. You.have never learned to think for yourself. Strange as it may seem, however, thinking • is one thing that college cannot reach you how to do. You can always get by somehow, copying your friend's papers, pretending that you know the answers, accepting the cajoli your parents and teachers. But at the*end of each semester you will feel a tinge of regret; and in the end yqu will discover that college is ' not the place for complacency, not the place for those who depend upon others for their ength. • . . Self-sufficiency is the only thing necessary for survival in college; yet the one thing —The - Fresno State College Collegian— which you must find out for yourself. It is this necessary quality which chaeges the'vociferous youngster, full of crculity in his thinking, jnto an educated, matured adult. We wish that wc could hand it out to you on a platter, but wc cannot. If is something thai you must learn for yourself. Wc can only say that wc hope you will remember college as the happiest days of your life.' It is true thlat for several years we have had to forego the pleasures of sports and other intercollegiate activities, which in itself is enough to depress and undermine the morale of college life, but due to the increase in this year's male enrollment there is great promise for the of sports and activities on a much larger scale than wc have had in the past two years. With the ending of the war in the European Theatre, and the release of ft it is.quite possible that Fresno State will again be in the midst of the collegiate "limelight."
