EDITORIALLY SPEAKING Thoughtful Togetherness FSC Job Bureau Brings Placement 'Talks To Seniors On one of the crowded tables in the cramped-for-spacc I University Bookstore lies a stack of plush-bound volumes entitled "The Family of Man." A person leafing through onej of these books would easily realize why this nation should see' fit to designate Feb. 17-24 .as Brotherhood Week. Xot that the dates. Feb. 17-24. are in themselves important, or that one week is considered sufficient to press home to the American public the importance of brotherhood. But a periodic reminder that mankind evolved from a central source and that a shrinking globe is demanding greater harmony between man is something that must constantly be re-uttered. "The Family of Man" Is a bound collection of 503 human interest photographs from 6S countries collected and edited by Edward Steichen for thc Museum of Modern Art in New- York. All the shades of human suffering are there — all the gaiety and sorrow, the passion, fear and struggles that please or plague the human soul. From the first complaint at the world during birth until the oozing hour- before death, life is an insolvable struggle, whether it_ be physical or financial, social or psychological. And "The Family of Man" portrays all of this vividly. A plump German fraulein lines up with wicker basket byj a pork store. An American housewife jockeys her food cart j through a crowded supermarket. A Mexican clad in calico and kerchief tills a truck farm in the sunset. A Londoner, — the human race. All must satisfy their wants to survive.: The basic laws of survival have never discriminated between race, color or creed. The Christian, the Hebrew, the Negro, the Moslem have never demanded something of nature that wasn't already there. But man has tended to cleave apart his family because of petty jealousies and selfish greed — to ostracize one neigh-1 gor and tromp with hobnailed boots on the rights of another to earn his way through life with whatever comfort he can salvage. It is essential, therefore, for organizations like the National Conference of Christians and Jews, who are sponsoring Brotherhood Week, to re-emphasizc the proposition! that no man. no race, no nation holds a priority in the Association Functions Described Hoard or Direct Frances Heffernan Represents FSC On National Board COLLEGIAN al Advertising Sen ice.
