And to the dead wc say that wc hope that your numbers will not have to increase much, more in order to teach all of us the futility of war?) INTER- VS. INTRA- t Economically collegiate football is top-heavy. It may nor come today or tomorrow, but it is certain that the giant will tumble. The Pacific Coast Conference must have read the writing on the wall when they hited Edward Atherton to straighten out its affairs in connection with the granting of athletic scholarships and aids. With the lead of the larger schools to follow, smaller institutions have embarked on football programs which cost their student associations more than they can afford. It is no secret that college student associations have for their greatest expenditure's, the funds which pay the board bills and expense accounts of footballers. After the war, there will be a period of economic hardship, all authorities on finance agree on this point. College activities will be no ex- The success of amateur boxing, Softball, and basketball, suggests a substitute program for so- c.illed big time football. A well-organized intramural set-up would ere- ate mote local interest. And although the participants might not be capable of professional performances, the fight and spirit they would show, will give the spectators a chance to see action The ruling power of amateurs was well illustrated by the great crowd that paid to see the recent Roosevelt High-Fresno High football game. A demonstration of fighting spirit and the will to win often attracts a" larger audience than the more polished performance. A comprehensive intramural schedule gives a chance for participation by a greater number of students.
