t Pvt. Tanaka knew that before he joined. He
was told he had practically no chance of coming back from the fracas alive. A brilliant student, he probably would have been granted,
in time,  leave (mm  the  relocation center  to
study at an Eastern university
And yet he choie tu repay America for what
she had given him. He forgot the treatment
he had received the last few months before he-
was relocated. He forgot the talk back in Gili-
fornia, his home, of keeping the Jap out. Instead, he remembered his early years, that period when he was treated-like the American
citizen he is. So he decided to give the U.S.
an active stake- on his- life.
His statement was taken from a letter to a
friend who was fortunate enough ro have the
right parentage. He was not trying to impress
his friend; she knew where his loyalties lay.      '
Now she'also knows that a Japanese soldier
would die- for his emperor—but sometimes that
emperor spells his name Uncle Sam.
