With these prophetic words it was announced to the members of the California state legislature this week that certain officials of the Universitj of California had agreed to the proposal of As- .. Williams of Los Angeles to make Fresno State and Santa Barbara State Col- minor parts of the great "colonui oj the Luiher Nicholls, comptroller' of the u expressed the official attitude which is expected to be backed by members of the Board of Regents of the University of California should a showdown be reached on the proposal. It is perhaps regrettable that the benevolent attitude of the northern adminu :h great faith and trust here, wing of the regents of the university has many advantages, those same regents. In reality, it means that the Fresno State College—which might have been known as a strong and independent University of Ccncral California—may be known as a "small ditiiion of that univeriily up in Berkeley." The long fight which the officials of this college have waged in the interests of promoting rlie extension of liberal arcs courses here and of increasing the prestige of our graduates—known for their scholastic and athletic achievements throughout the nation- would be lost. Mass production has all the .id- vantages of quantity, doc none of quality. As- Hugh Burns, always a stat porter of Fresno State, declared of the posal that he would favor such if the high standards of the college could be maintained ot bettered. Is it not peculiar that a man in Mr. burns' position would be afraid that lower the educational value of Fresno State? Especially if no such danger L\ist>. Sorely Assemblyman Burns is not crying "Wolf, wolf!" just to hear the sound of his own To accept the proposition of tying Fresno State to the apron strings of the University of California would result, eventually, in the complete submergence of Fresno State as a liberal ■ arts college, and sooner ot later it would be subjected to a narrow, rigid curricula dealing only with a specialized department in the field of education. The move upon the part of Mr. Burns in asking for university standing for Fresno State was not to restrict the educational advantages of our •present institution, but to increase them in stride with the growing demand for better Central California education. That can only be accomplished by independent university status—not by being bound band and foot to the University of California!
