Thc conditions call for a courage and heroism never exceeded ... thc splendid records of America's struggle for liberty. Both old and young will have to face self-denial and sacrifices that wc regarded a few months ago as unthinkable. We may have to accept association and labors which we dislike in order that there may again be security for those things which make life worth living. Democracy has not yet solved many urgent problems of securing social justice, although the progress, especially in some Scandinavian countries now under the conqueror's heel, had ad- anced much farther than that achieved by any other form ot government. The question now is not of minor faults but the one great question as to whether the future of humanity and its dcs- tiny are to be worked out under thc harsh force and espionage of brutal dictatorship or under a form of government which permits problems to be discussed freely and ultimately solved in accordance with respect for human rights and thc dignity of the individual. This year is ours to use to prepare better for the grave res sibilitics ahead. Our national leaders urge youth to spend in thc schools and colleges, training for clearer thinking and effective action. Students in college arc exempt from m"' conscription until next summer. The wisest plan is to c your college work in the confidence that your services, or war, will be most useful and most satisfying if you have prepared to make them efficient and directed with intelligence. America has found its most splendid leadership and its most loyal citizenry in the hours of crises. We rise to our finest possibilities when great responsibilities.call us to patriotic service in whatever line thc greatest need may be. The youth of the present day will not be found inferior to those who, with meager resourci made possible our national greatness. The events and decisions ear will stand out as great occasions, to be recalled vividly throughout the remainder of our lives. I greet our great body of students at thc opening of this college year in full confidence imerican youth will meet bravely its obligations in a spirit worthy of the greatest American tradiions.
