Bairgdar- Buying Publicity Fresno State College hit a new low during the ■week when the Board of Athletic Control of the college offered to pay the train fare to Texas for the sports editor of a local newspaper in order that the college tnight get some publicity and create some "good-will." I doing the board placed the college on the low level of an institution which has to buy its good-will and publicity. As far as we know, and after some investigatic the matter, Fresno is the only college on the Coast which has reverted to the stage where it must pay sports writers to make the college known. Presumably the necessary funds are being taken from an athletic budget which has been in the red for the past several years; To top it all. paying the way of a representative of one newspaper and not any others shows rank discrimination. If the college is to pay the way of one local reporter they may just as well take representatives of all papers circulating in Fresno. Also there are some representatives of the Associated and United Press services that might like a trip. If "good-will" is the reason back of it all we may as well make it complete and pay the way for all local reporters and make a party of While no reflections are being intended toward the person receiving the trip,4he Collegian believes that a bad policy has been set by the Board of Athletic Control and, if still possible, should rescind its action. If the n paper employing a writer does not deem it necessary to send htm there itself, there is absolutely no reason why the college should go into debt to send him. If Fresno State is not worthy of getting itself before the public in its own right, the proper action would be to do so by legitimate means instead of going out of their way to buy it Evidently the board, in granting the proposed trip, did so without full consideration of all the phases of the situation, and with further consideration would not have done it But this is not for us to sa; Even though the money for the train fare may come out of the athletic budget and instead may be a part of the guarantee offered by Hardin-Simmons University, the action is still entirely wrong since some grid- der, who has been working every night for the past two months, will be robbed of a well-earned trip.
