Once again The Collegian wishes to take up the grumbling of many college students and amplify them so that they might come to the attention of proper authorities. The grumbling which again seems to be gaining much momentum has to do with the college union, in particular, about the type of food doled out at the existing prices. ever there was a place where someone did not get what he paid for, the Union was it. The reason for the complaint Is not hard to find. After finding for a period of two years that the union was not making money for the association, officials went out to seek a new manager who could make the place pay. This the present manager of the union did; and it is in making the union a money-making proposition that the management has not only failed th, of hypocritical. Y TU-'\V. The very nature of a cooperative organization—and the union is supposed to be such— suggests that there is a mutual responsibility on the part of the student and the organization: one exists for the benefit of the other. A cooperative organization that loses money is in reality the better kind—it gives to the students more than that for which they pay. But this type cannot, for business reasons, continue to exist. On the other hand, there is the type of cooperative organization that continues to report profits. This is the type that really fails. for in reporting a surplus, it admits that it has taken from the students more than it has given It is because the college cafeteria falls into this latter class that the students are once again starting to complain about food at the union. A surplus should not be pointed at with pridef" rather, it should be kept quiet, because it is an indication of such a degree of efficiency that one side of the cooperative organization is not getting what it deserves. Railing at efficiency seems a curious thing to do; yet when efficiency becomes so intense that it defeats its own purpose there is room for complaint.' This is the reason why students :s food. e matter t the u Surplus Appears as Just Another Political Football Again it comes to the attention of The Collegian that it is possible although improbable that Fresno State will receive any appropriations for building improvements on the campus or for proposed new buildings in the form of a new administration building and a men's gym- Again the la< matter of Fresno appropriations until after the h p\'n* '"'"">' '"'"' ""'' <-ho»,n •forthcoming gubernatorial election and. mor. likely, not until the end of the 1937-39 fiscal w« with th. .tory ni AmTrlc \\Z,'- The need for more and better buildings has ",',',' '.., been felt here for many years, particularly at b"uvvciopi-d"!™ "n th," lumi/llr the present time.
