COLLEGIAN EDITORIAL FEATURE PACE E ASSOCIATION Av Paul Bartlett \ EI.WOOP Ettt I ■ fclllor Why Aid Students? Anyone who has read any of the news articles that have come nut recently showinp the tremendous amounts of money lieinp sjient for relief purposes can not but ask himself whether all of this money is well spent Certainly the spending of billions of dollars should be the grave concern of every normal thinking person. For the past year and a half, there have lieen several thousand students who have in the J>ame of "relief" received monthly allowances which tney have used to keep themselves in college. If it were not lor these funds, there would lie that many more young men and women aimlessly wandering upon the streets. Now these students are faced with the prospect of having their allow- anees taken away, and hence the necessity of having to live on funds that are already meager. There is no doubt that the discontinuance of SERA will work an unbearable hardship 0:1 a great number of students. It would not ne out of reason, under these circumstances, to propose a sort of permanent "relief fund for the-e needy students. Nothing a government can tlo will bring if more rewards than the training of its citizens. Anv investment to bring about an enlightened citizenry is certainl-' a go id investment, not only for the country but for civilization in general. The millions that are bein;; i'"led o;:t to persons who are on relief rolls may be .loin;} some good, but there is a great leakage. Congress could do the country a good turn and tighten up the administratio:', of relief, and through part of the saving thus made, establish a fund to be used by needy dents all over the country- To aid students is to smile upon the future. —«•• ■tl program over CHS.
