Th* American Medical Association estimates disease induced by environmenUl pollution costs $38 billion a yeer. CsliforntaV2,000-mile coastline has been reduced to less then 200 mil** for public use because of greedy subdividers and off-shore oil drillers. Evaryvehsre in our •Golden SUte* land is being eaten up, million* of fish, fowl, flora and fauna arc being destroyed. The water is getting muddier, the sir thicker, and free land scarcer. A grim picture indeed, but there is hope in sight — Proposition 9, the Cslifornia Clean Environment Initiative. Proposition 9, if enacted, would give Californians decent odd* in their fight for 'uture survivsl. Th* act would call for stringent air pollution control systems, re- covery of coastal lands, protection of wilderness areas, a timetable for reduced pollution from internal combustion engines, a temporary moratorium on nuclear power plant construction, and a means try which th* private citizen could take * polluter to court. Th* initiative has been a grassroots concept since its inception. Individual citizen* wrote it, signed it, secur ed enough names to put it on the ballot, snd it has been individual citizens who have publicized •t. Of course there is opposition to it. But from rrt*orri"> fliq industry' Standard Oil and other monstrous conglomerates, are pouring millions into arrti-propauanda aimed at defeating Proposition 9. They see the proposition as a blockade to their easy street of millions of dollars in profit at the expense of the environment. It was these same industrial monsters who helped defeat the trsnsit act, Proposition 18, during the last election. We cannot afford to become victims of the lies, deceit, ami false charges concerning Proposition 9 being spewed alrout by thr- nervous corporate monsters. We must pass Proposition9.Our lives veritably dap and en it.
