Y SPEAKING Four Represent Hundreds Tomorrow afternoon two Fresno State College mijoi ' dents and two female students will receive $50 cash/km tor their outstanding work in directed teaching assfgnmj during the spring semester. The award winners repres more than 200 students who arc participating in the directed teaching program^a* FSC on both tht; elementary and ondary levels. ^~t-\ These future high school, junior high school and eler tsry school instructors contiguously are commended for their! outstanding work in carrying out assignments. Much of their | work goes by unnoticed a^FSC. The award program, sponsored by the Fresno PTA, move to add incentive to the directed teaching program and therefore help increase the number of good teachers. Man conferences on education — both national and statewide— have heen held on problems of education. And rWppic dis cussed-at most conferences is the problem of How Can.W Get Enough Good Teachers—and Keep Them? Atlhe White House Conference on Education, held between Nov. 28 and Dec. 1 of 1955, 1,800 delegates studied the crucial issues .of education. The conference made recommendations on the "good' teacher shortage urging more assistance in the teaching programs at colleges and high schools. The Fresno.City Council PTA has taken the FSC award program under its wing to help attract and hold able Awards are given to encourage outstanding professional performance and promise among students of leaching. The- directors of the program also feel that the PTA can keep a closer tab on the immediate problems on recruiting, preparing and holding able teachers in the. profession and thus lend greater interest antl support to the matter. Faculty members, administrators and students, especially, should take notice of the awards and the work of the directed teachers. And PTA groups are to be commended for their active participation in helping to solve the teacher shortage.
