A Word With The Frosh
Last week The Cslle^iarPcjxplaincd the advantages that
could be derived by frcshmorrand, through them, by the Fres-I
no State College student body from the orientation program
carried on at. Freshman Camp nnd here on the FSC campus.
Now, it seems, the frosh are "coming through" to keep The
Collegian from being guilty of mendacity. Their action and
activities in some of the little things of college life—their
cheering at Saturday's football game, their support and
bers at the after-game street dance, their ffit '
inating 66 of their classmates for freshman offices, th<
that they haven't "chickened out" of carrying on some hazing
of the sophomores—these all add up to a more spirited, livelier
But there are two sides to every ledger and it is not yet
evident whether the frosh will end their coming whirl of important activities on the credit side. Because, you, the frosh,
have "goofed" on several occasions already. To name only
two, you goofed on the surprise rally for the football ^players
and you goofed—to your own latent detriment and "that of
incoming students in the next few years—by not filling your
quota on the five student body committees. When there ,
only 43 applicants for these committees, out of some 1,1
freshmen, it seems that "the word" didn't take full effect.
Now just a short final pleading for you to make
of your approaching activities.
First of all, vote tomorrow—all of you. Don't cri
actions of your officers later when you helped to elect them
by your-absence from the polls. And vote in the finals next
week.
Secondly, go to the Freshman Reception Friday. Enjoy
yourselves, meet your college leaders, your classi
your future officers. ^^H^^^^^^
Then, get up some gumption and make a good showing in j
the Brawl. Winning it will be a big feather for you.
If you conduct your activities smoothly, efficiently and as a
group.-you'll win the respect of your fellow students and feel,
after a period of indecision, that you finally belong to college
—to this college.
It's worth a try.

that by instituting a "roses and razzes1" feature the situations
will be brought more into the open for viewi:
dent body. So here are the current roses—for remarkably fine J
jobs—and razzes—to those who just didn't care whether a
job got done or that somebody was inconvenienced.
Roses: To the rally committee and Dora Jean Glenn, its
hard-working chairman, for the successful motorcade and
first rally, for some bright new ideas that will be worth copying in future years and for an all-around excellent showing
to Fresno that, its local college contains more than some fellows looking for draft exemptions. To Maylene Wong and her
assistants, for some excellent card tricks Saturday. To Russell
Howland and the FSC Band, for its top showing at the game j
after only a week of practice. To the campus criminology students (the campus "cops") for the tickets they give double
parkers and for helping to solve a difficult and irritating situation. To Roxie Bell, belatedly, for spending her summer putting out a sharp, attractice and informative student handbook.
Razzes: To the double parkers and those who take up twc
spaces by parking carelessly. To those who failed to cheer Saturday night and wouldn't stay around to sing their Alma Mater. To those who tear out Shaw Avenue at 50 to 60 miles per
hour, going to the new campus, endangering their own li\
and those of others. To the students who don't compile th
book list early and take up too much time when they get
the front of the book store line. To those who condemn the
personnel of the book store for hifeh prices and "all the profits" being made. Publishers set tqe prices, fellows and girls,
and the profits revert to the FSC (Association, thence to
