—Tr>» Frasno Stat* Colltflw CoIlavgSem- i Let's Go To The Ball Game *s\t 2 PM today the Fresno State College varsity baseball team will officially open its 1958 home schedule. And the Fresno State College Park probably will be well-populated with local patrons of the game, many of them, we hope, students. In a school that has had its serious ups and downs in the world of sports—or ups and downs that it has taken seriously—the baseball situation during the past five years has shone forth as one of the brightest stars in FSC's athletic firmament Baseball, at our school, has comparatively risen much higher and attracted more national acclaim and attention to FSC than any other sport There are several reasons for this. One is the fact that the San Joaouin Valley is one of the baseball hot spots in a state that is the seedbed of much big league talent The majors are top-heavy with California ball players. This area, whether people know it or not furnishes many of them. A better reason for the excellence of FSC's teams is, of course, the fine job done by Pete Beiden. An ability to do a great job with what he has to work with and a personality and reputation forceful enough to attract many top valley prep stars here has enabled Beiden to consistently field the best college baseball team in the state, despite the raids major league talent scouts make on liis teams each summer. Beiden is knownas a developer of professional talent a man who will really do a lot for the kid who has a sincere desire to play pro balL And he does. This reputation gets FSC some great talent; unfortunately a lot of it "goes pro" before graduation. But Pete always comes up with more ballplayers, guys that usually do a pretty good job at filling the shoes of their predecessors. That's one reason college baseball, which doesn't draw flies at other California schools, makes money here. If s good college baseball Fresno State College is fortunate in having whatis. probably the best college ball club in the state again this year. Fresno has been fortunate lately in having some good, warm baseball weather. These factors will result in good turnouts as the Bulldogs open their home season today and tomorrow. Again, fef s hope the student body is well represented.
